Hi, I am new to this subject. My grandchild was diagosed with Cystic Fibrosis. No one in my family has ever had this. I do not even know what it is. The other side of my daughter in laws family has two cases of it with the children that are age 5 and 7. It was discovered at age 2 for each.
I was told that Cystic Fibrosis must be on both sides of the family genetically for anyone to get it. Is that so?
That's true -- the child has to get a bad gene from the mom and a bad gene from the dad. If they don't get one from both, and only get one from one and a normal one from the other parent, they end up being a carrier.
You can be a carrier and exhibit no symptoms, so the parents don't have to HAVE CF themselves in order to have a child with CF. In fact, this particular predicament is extremely unlikely -- because CF makes it difficult for the body to break down many things (most notably mucous with regards to the lungs and reproductive system,) the tubes in the reproductive system have this habit of getting all clogged up with mucous and making fertility a slight problem.
Some CF patients have still managed to produce children, but most of them will have problems.
As far as research goes, I suggest you check out the Cystic Fibrosis foundation in your area, and see if they have any information pamphlets for you to read. I fear any explanation I start doling out will end up being too technical.
