I find that when I am on the treadmill I can run for 30 minutes with no problems, but outside I struggle after 10 minutes. Does this mean the treadmill does not burn as many calories, or work you out as well as outside running? Or is running a mile just a mile regardless of how you do it.

I would think it would be more difficult outdoors with the random ups and downs of hills, ect.... but for me I find it opposite... i can run 3 miles easy outside, but its really hard to do the same distance on treadmill.. i think its because of the scenery and the fact that outdoors your actually going somewhere and can see your end points, ect.... running and getting no where on a treadmill looking at the same thing the whole time is just boring for me... but thats me.. :)

I know what you mean, on the treadmill is easier for me too. I think the difference, aside from ups and downs outside, is: on the treadmill you can clearly control the speed. Outside you run on "instinct" so, if you're anything like me, you have no idea of your speed and tend to run too fast.
Also, a treadmill is a lot softer to run on, and you don't have to watch out where you're running (objects on the ground, people you're passing etc.)

I agree with this statement to a certain extent; however, I find running outside in general is more difficult than running on the treadmill, even if the ground is leveled. I can run 2 miles on the treadmill on speed 7, but when it comes to running outside, I burn out quicker. I think that running on the treadmill is great cardio, but I don't think it would help if you were a runner. It's just not the same. I think our body knows when it is actually moving or not, and that goes back to your statement about the scenery. But then I suppose, one can run longer on the treadmill, because unlike running outside, there's nothing to push you, and on the treadmill, if you leave it on then you're going to keep going.

How about this, with the treadmill, the machine is propelling you, while you basically just sit there and pick up your legs. You don't have to push against the ground to maintain forward motion. When you are outside, YOU have to provide the propulsion. YOU have to push against the ground to go forward.
Don't run on a treadmill unless you absolutely have to. There's just no reason to.

the difference is that outside you have to run and propell, the treadmill does the propel part, but you still burn alot of caloires probably just as much outside, depending on the terrain, I find I can run better on the treadmill than outside, outside I jog a little slower, than on the treadmill.
you can mimic outside by inclining the treadmill part of your running workout, that is what I do, I will do some segments (can't quite go nonstop yet) on the flat then if I am really energetic will incline my mill as far as it will go and go as long as I can on that at a jog, I also do some walking and jogging outside, but since I am heavy it hurts my bad knee more than the mill. I injuried in a very bad fall I had about 5 years ago, when I tripped on the only tree branch in my yard with my hands full and no way to break my fall with my hands but I managerd to break it with my knee (ouch!!).
so I have to jog really soft outside, on grass and dirt of course not pavement, and go slow, but on the mill I can go a little harder and faster with minimal pain, compared if I did that outside.
so that may explain why your can only go for 10 minutes you are outside maybe there is incline and you have to propell yourself more and the heat probably doesn't help, I run on the mill with the air conditioner blasting if it is really muggy or hot,

So, if you have to use more energy running outside, does that mean you burn more calories? I hate running on treadmills. Fortunately, I have a great jogging trail near me. I like the scenery, the fresh air, and passing by the same people every morning.
By the way, how many calories do you burn per mile? I heard it was about 100. Is that right?

That's what I was wondering BettyRides, do you burn more calories outside? Maybe. And since I have such a hard time outside with sweating and sore legs I guess maybe you burn just a little bit more.
I feel very weird that I prefer the treadmill. Outside is nice but the treadmill is so predictable, you can set the pace and incline and everything. And with this horrible humidity it is nice inside.
And yes I heard that you burn on average 100 calories per mile depending on your weight and intensity.
