I have a gum pain since last Wednesday. I went to my dentist, she said that I have a gum infection and that cleaning will help. It didn't and she prescribed antibiotic. But it doesn't seems that it's working. My gums are swollen, but no other symptoms. The pain travels around from one place to another, but in some places it's more painful than in other. I floss and rinse with listerine and salty water a lot and it doesn't get better. Any advice?
Thanks.

Yes,

First of all what does the regular dentist say? Then I would go back and ask the hygenist about seeing a periodontist. It sounds like early stage gingivitis.
Don't let this go remember that gingivitis is reversable but periodontal disease is not. I would not put it off. Take it from one who waited too long, did not press the issue hard enough with my dentist, and now I am suffering from periodontal disease. Make an appointment and get it checked out.

All the best.

How long have you been taking the antibiotics for???? Maybe you might need a different anitbiotic??? I would call the dentist and tell them that they need to do something before it turns into something far worse then just a gum infection.

On the pain issue part, have you tried tree tea oil???? It has seemed to help alot with the tenderness and redness of my incision sites so it might help you. I know it wont hurt, just dont swallow it.

I hope that you are feeling better really soon.

The first thing you need to know is that rinsing with a mouthwash like listerine "a lot" is not good. True, your mouth can contain bacteria that can do harm to your teeth and gums but rinsing too much with listerine will only make it worse. Our mouths contain healthy bacteria which is critical for healthy gums and teeth. The listerine doesn't target just the bad bacteria, but the good as well. The healthy balance is thrown off and you end up with more of the "bad" bacteria taking hold because there's no "good" bacteria to fight it.
The antibiotic will work. It may take a day or two before you notice a difference, but don't stop using it until you've taken it all. My guess is, your gums are inflamed and sensitive from the frequent use of the listerine. I did the same thing once. Trying to kill the infection in my gums, I went overboard with the listerine. When the pain finally became unbearable, I went to a dentist. That's when I learned about the different types of bacteria in our saliva and the importance of not over-doing the mouthwash.
Once your gums are back to normal, you can use your mouthwash again, but no more than once a day. I sure hope you're feeling better by tomorrow.
