Hi there,
Our 3 and a half month old DD was diagnosed by blood test with CF at birth. She had a visible meconium ileus for 4 straight months on ultrasound but it cleared itself up a month before she was born(we are so thankful to God for that).
She started on half an enzyme per feeding and is now up to 1 and a half per feeding. Over the weekend she went 40 hours without a BM and then finally had four within a 10 hour period. She had 2 yesterday(pretty much back to normal for her) and then just one today, it was huge. She has been VERY cranky at night after her last feeding and arches and screams these blood curdling screams that are totally unlike her. It's only at night though, although during the day she is a little more cranky than ususal. Up until these past few days she has been a very, very easygoing baby......she almost never had cry sessions for no reason(during CPT is another story). I've been in touch with her dr. and dietician who I trust and respect very much but neither of them seem to think this is a big deal. I'm getting really worried though because I'm afraid that maybe a blockage is slowly forming and she hasn't been affected by it until now. Any ideas or thoughts on this? I would love to hear from anyone who has had similar experiences. Thank you, Nicole

We went thru this with DS 'cuz he was born with a blockage and had to have surgery at birth. Most of his stools were frequent and loose until we got the enzyme situation figured out and I think he associated stooing with pain. We went thru a period of constipation and had to give ds Milk of Mag a couple times a day to clear things out. The other thing was that DS had reflux for awhile and had to be on zantac or he'd spit up or his tummy would be upset.

CF and figuring out enzymes is stressful at first 'cuz there's no exact science and your child can't tell you what's going on. As ds got older we also had problems with Poop holding -- he associated pooping with discomfort, so he wouldn't go and then he'd have such horrible hard large stools that upset him and his parents even more. If you're seriously concerned ask to see your doctor and they can do an xray to put your mind at ease. DS's showed that his colon was full of poo -- yep, he was constipated, so we had to give him MOM. Too embarrassing.

Thanks for the encouragement.....My DD and I just got home from the clinic, they let us come down at the last minute and the doc checked her out. He didn't feel anything and had planned on getting her an xray but changed his mind because her tummy was so soft. I totally trust him so I wasn't disappointed about no xray. He guesses that she is just plain sick of being hot. We live in Southern CA in a house with no AC and despite my efforts to keep her cool I guess she's just mad about it. Thanks again
