I've been slipping back and forth into a depression for the last 10 years and once again it has creeped up. I have learned to control it somewhat with age so it does not get so bad I can't function. This time it has completely taken me over and I'm watching everything fall apart...job, social life etc..

I decided to give in and try meds (zoloft) even though I've always been diehard about using only supplenments to help. So far I haven't felt better (one week)but I haven't gotton any worse.

I think alot of my problem stems from drug and alcohol use and have screwed my brain chemicals up. How does everyone feel about how substances effect your brain?

Sorry so long....just trying to cope.

Hi Jayfl420
Welcome to the boards!

I think you should give the zoloft at least 4 to 6 weeks, unless you start having bad side effects.

I do know you can't mix alcohol and drugs with prescription medications. It really defeats the purpose because alcohol is a depressant.

I hope the Zoloft works for you.

Best wishes,
Sam

Thanks for the welcome. I'm having a really tough time today. It's impossible to concentrate on work. I'm afraid my firing is inevitable.

I'm glad you decided to try the meds. It can be scary at first, but when you find the right one it can make all the difference. You're not adverse to using supplements.. and those are chemicals too, just like medications. Just because something is "man-made" doesn't make it bad, just like because something is "natural" doesn't necessarily make it good for you either. The waiting period can be tough, but hang in there because it does take a few weeks for the medications to work.

I'm not really sure how drugs and alcohol might affect neurochemicals in the long-term. I'm sure there has been a lot of research done on that that you could look into online. But I would definitely try to stay away from alcohol while you are on medication and try to eat right too, so the drug can get into your system better.

Take care.

...I'm afraid my firing is inevitable. Are you sure that there isn't anything you can do to keep your job? Do you like your job and want to stay?

Losing your job may seem like the end of the world, but it may lead to a wonderful new begining. Believe me-- I've lost a lot of jobs. I am looking for a job right now as a matter of fact.

It sounds like you are alive and kicking Jay. ;) Keep us up to date on what happens next ok?

I've let my boss and coworker I deal with know about what's going on. I had to tell them something after missing all these days the past couple of weeks.

I think the worse part is my insomnia. I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep. It pretty much ruins me the next day. I realize the mistakes I've been making at work the past few weeks. But, I've reached out and asked for help from my two direct coworkers and they are both very willing.

I started the zooft a week ago and I hope to heck it works. I need to learn to pray more for good vibes.
