I can not get over the fear of SIDS. On another board I post on this families six month old son just died today of what they think is SIDS and I find myself in tears and I had never even talked to this lady. I would just die if that happened to me. Am I being too paranoid? I mean I've actually awakened my DD just to make sure she was OK. And she is a tummy sleeper that's the only way she'll sleep and I know they say not too. This is so sad!

My heart breaks for that family. It is so sad and they will be in my prayers beginning right now.

SIDS is extremely rare though. The rates are not even close to 1% and that is for a newborn tummy sleeper. Those rates drop even further as the baby gets older. I know its of little comfort if your baby is the one, but the chances of it happening are extremely slim. This type of fear is normal in parenting though. We have an 18 year old who is driving. Day before yesterday a friend of his and his younger brother was in a very serious accident. I was beside myself tonight until he got home from work. I can't get my mind off that accident and probably won't be able to for a long time, so what you are feeling after learning about your friend's baby is normal. Just try to keep in mind that it is very unlikely that it will ever happen to your baby.

You are not alone. I feel so bad for this family. I think that is the most horrible thing that could happen. I had my first DD in september and was so worried about sids. I had a brother that passed away from sids almost 25 years ago. My mom still has a really hard time with it and it really scared my about my dd and my sisters little boy. You will always have sometime of fear for your child in the back your mind when you have kids. I think that happens from the day you find out your having a baby. It's really hard not to think about that kind of stuff. Remember the rates are low.

I live in fear of SIDS. I don't know of anyone that died from it but I have heard stories like this. It has to be so aweful. You just can't imagine. I know every night I listen to my DS breathing. I will wake up in the night and ask DH to check him. Since DS bassinet is on DH side of the bed.
