Does birth control really cause weight gain? What about sexual side effects? Are there any that are less apt to do this?

Birth control has the POTENTIAL to cause weight gain, sexual side effects, etc. It's not a sure thing that any of them will happen, but the POTENTIAL is there. Many women use hormonal birth control with no ill side effects at all. Many women loose weight, have an increased sex drive, better complexion, regulated periods, etc.

Many professionals say that birth control does NOT cause weight gain, beyond a few pounds of water weight. They say that those women who claim to gain 15+ pounds on the pill gain weight because of lack of proper diet and exercise, not because of the pill.

I believe that it DOES cause weight gain. Reasons being, I started taking birth control in January and stopped in May. In that amount of time I had gained about 10-15 lbs. My eating habits never changed, so I don't think that was the cause of it. I took birth control about 4 years ago too, and I gained 20 lbs while on it. My doctor said that it wasn't because of the birth control, but I beg to differ. I think everyone has different experiences, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that it causes weight gain because I firmly believe it did for me. Also, as far as the sex drive goes, birth control INCREASES mine! So I think everyone has different experiences, it is to be expected when taking hormones!

Everybody's different, but Ovcon-35 works great for my sex drive. I had a small amount of weight gain (7 lbs.) due to a temporary increase in appetite (1 month). I lost the weight when my appetite went back down, though. Birth control is really just a trial and error thing. Good luck! :)

I do believe that it can cause weight gain but you just really have to work harder not to gain. I am on Yasmin right now and it is great. I haven't gained any weight but on Alesse I gained 25 lbs.! I was dieting and exercising too. The weight was like cement. I am really happy with Yasmin but I think all birth control decreases my sex drive. Hey it is birth control right? haha.
