or fatty liver, go on the atkins Diet? I read that many recommend weight loss solutions to high liver enzymes and fatty liver. One of the fastest "weight-dropping" diets is the low carb or Adkins diet. Is that safe for being so short term? Does the weight loss "out-weigh" (pardon the pun) the damage of not losing weight and putting stress on the liver?

Don't know about the Adkins diet, but last year my Dr. let me go on the Slim Fast diet, and I lost about 30 lbs, felt great too. (LOL) Of course I gained it all back now.

Losing weight is always a good thing when you have fatty liver and elevated enzymes-but, you're right, how you do it can impact your health. (loved the pun)
Before starting ANY diet regime I'd check w/your dr to make sure it is beneficial to your health--esp w/raised liver enzymes.
Drs usually do advocate losing weight to help fatty liver-but to do it in a way that will not deprive your body the much needed nutrients to keep the engine running smoothly. I was told not to eliminate anything totally or drastically cut back on carbs, b/c the body needs them--just not as many as we usually eat daily. Usually the Atkins diet is for lifestyle change--once you go off it you gain the weight back--so unless you're prepared to eat that way the rest of your life--I wouldn't do it. I did a 1200 cal a day diet-and didn't deprive myself. I didn't stick to exactly 1200cals a day-but close enough and felt good doing it. I ate small snacks/meals totalling 6x a day to keep the metabolism up--and it really was amazing how much that helped!! I lost 35 lbs in a fairly short period of time, but I didn[t crash diet either. A trick I learned was to eat a piece of fruit abt 15 mins before dinner-it curbed my appetite and gave me the little sugar fix I craved during the day. BTW-I'm not a big one for exercise, so I never parked in the close parking spots--I always parked out when at the store or at work--that way I got walking excercise--it adds up. Just my $.02 worth.

check with your doctor. if you have a chronic liver problem you may not be able to process the proteins that the atkins diet allows.... red meats are a no no for people with end stage liver problems..... i would ask a doctor for sure!
