According to Beth Mansfield:
"Your best energy foods are those that are rich in carbohydrate. Breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables, low fat milk and yogurts, and legumes (chick peas, lentils, kidney beans, etc.) are your best choices. Use the food guide to plan carbohydrate rich choices at every meal and snack!"

This is ort of true, but not 100%. Most people have a BIG misunderstanding of what a carbohydrate truly is.
This is because there are actually two (2) types. One is great, the other can be deadly! COMPLEX carbos will provide you with optimum energy. SIMPLE carbos may give you an initial boost, but they also let you 'crash' hard and heavy, and soon!
SIMPLE carbos, to make it the most easily understood, are ANY PROCESSED FOOD. Simply put, if it went through ANY process other than just picking, washing, packing and shipping, it is processed. That includes breads and cereals.
The problem with these is that the body sees them as pretty much straight table sugar. We eat them, and they are so pre-digested (from the processing) that they convert almost immediately to pump our blood full of sugar (energy) in one mass jet. If we are in active mode, this may be burned off right away, quickly, and then we are left with no viable energy in the blood. If we don't burn it right away, it is stored as fat. Frequent consumption of these foods throws the body into an insulin roller-coaster of highs and lows that is VERY detrimental to the body.
Though bread and cereals do have a place in our diet, in moderation, they are still too readily converted to be used to boost energy, as it generally (not always) just ends up as stored fat.
COMPLEX carbos are ANY (unprocessed) plant food. These are your energy foods. The body breaks them down more slowly, through the process of digestion, so that there is a steady, sustained release of sugar (energy), kind of like a time release capsule. Since it maintains an even flow, there are not the highs and crashes that accompany the simple carbs, less strain on your systems and health.
