I was recently diagnosed with MS by two neurologists, on April 29 and July 19. MRI shows lesions in brain and spine. Symptoms have been ongoing for about 8 months and include numb, tingling hands, llermites sign and fatigue. I also had a six month case of optic neuritis 5 years ago.

Today I had a sudden, frightening, severe episode. It was a combination of numbness, tingling and significant pain (burning sensation) in my legs, base of spine and arms. I was dizzy and disoriented and basically immobilized. It lasted only 30-45 seconds and I felt fine immediately afterwards.

I've seen very little reference to this type of attack in MS literature. They're usually less severe and last days, weeks or months. Is this common in MS? Could it be something else? Any feedback at all is sincerely appreciated.

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but welcome to the board.

I'm not sure what to think of that sudden, severe attack. I know my daughter's nerves and symptoms fluctuate a lot moment by moment, just not necessarily to the degree you described. Definitely make a record of it and if it happens again I would call your doc.

One last thought - do you have any spinal/cervical problems that you're aware of? They can cause nerve pain and vertigo.

Take care,
Julie

i believe what you've described is referred to as a tonic seizure.
