3 week old grandson constantly screams every waking moment and that is almost always. seems to have colic but a very bad case if it is. We have tried Mylacon, Stomach ease (herbal) and Doctor put him on prescription Zantac. No HELP. He has had Avent bottles, gerber, platex and Dr. Brown's bottles. He screams, thrashes his arms and legs and nothing seems to help. It is so sad. My son and baby brother had colic and I have never seen anything like this. Doctor changed formula also. No help. Doctor says maybe an ultra-sound is next. When you can get him to burp they are BIG. He is hard to burp but when he does they are good ones. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Dyana

Did he change to a soy formula? I suggest that, and give it three days to kick in. I also recommend a product called Gripe Water. I'm so sorry about this little guy. DS was a screamer too...all day long. His little belly was so gassy, yet he was also always starving. You could also try some massage. Softly rub the belly in circular motions, then gently pump his legs. This will force some of the gas out.

The "baby whisperer" also has some tricks that sometimes worked for me.

The 4 "s's"
Swaddle
Side
Shake
Shush

Swaddle him
Hold him sideways
Very gently shake "I prefer the word jiggle" him
And softly give a continuous "shhhhhhhh" into his ear.
Do it all at the same time

Good luck!

kiera, thanks for responding. We have done everything you suggested except the doctor did not change to soy yet, just a low iron formula. He is getting an ultra-sound as we speak, so I'll let you know what happens. It is just so sad. Like I said I had a brother and son that had colic but this is the worst I have seen.

It sounds like he may be allergic to milk-based formula. I would switch to soy (I've found Isomil is the most gentle on their stomachs, even though Good Start Supreme has a soy formula). Isomil also claims to reduce colic after 3 days of being on it. My first changed dramatically for the better when we switched her. We started my 2nd right out on it and she has been a happy baby from the start. If it is colic, there is a book that my doctor recommended The Happiest Baby on the Block. It has some good suggestions for calming the baby.

This sounds exactly like my DD until I put her on Soy formula. She is on Isomil. She was on Goodstart then we went to Isomil Soy and my DH bought Goodstart Soy but it all started back up again so now she is back to Isomil and she is my sweet baby girl. I'm telling you my poor baby was so unhappy until last Friday. We even mixed the Isomil with her old Goodstart for 3 days just so it wasn't a drastic change. She was fine until DH bought her the wrong formula. He thought it was what she was on because he remembered goodstart so he bought it in Soy. Isomil is the one that is best I feel. It is for Jade anyway. I hope this is all that is wrong with your precious one. I know how it feels not to be able to help them. Good luck!

doctor did not do ultra-sound today. Instead wants him to take Prevacid instead of the zantac. Then if it does not help he wants to do a scope down his throat. I have been reading about infant reflux and it says babies hic-up
alot and he does. Dr. Still does not want to change formula. Would it hurt him if we try anyway? I raised 2 kids plus 2 grandkids and I have to ask questions.
Things have changed so much. My DR. had me give my son half ounce of beer to help him burp.
Thanks

I know I have a co worker whose son is 3 months older than mine and they had all sorts of troubles when he was born. I know they had him on Zantac and changed bottles and formulas alot, They ended up keeping him on the Zantac and putting him on the Similac Alimentum (I think it is already broken down some so it was gentler on his tummy, not sure). And they still had good and bad days. He had to have the light ran down throat also, but it was after he was older. Have they thought of looking for a different Dr. for a second opinion, there is no need to keep prolonging the baby receiving something to help. Maybe there is a pediatric specialist close by? Goodluck, I know it is so hard to see them suffer, and it will take its toll on the parents also.

I cannot believe this doc has let this go on for so very long.Do you know just why the US was not done.I would demand it,really. This does not sound like normal colic to me.Both of my sons had bad colic and it was never as constant as your grandsons.it was usually more "patterned" in nature.Any baby that is crying for THIS long and this much really needs to be evaluated by someone other than the doc who is currently treating. It is GOOD that you are asking questions. That is the only way you will get answers. The next time this child is having one of those screaming spells?Take him to the ER for a real eval with ct or uS done.Has there been ANY sort of bloodwork done? You need to see what is going on in there and they only way is with further testing.i think this poor child has suffered long enough. He has very obviously been in great pain and deserves some relief.Unfortunetly, his current doc refuses to really help.A US should definitely been done by now, really. If you have to, get bitc**.And demand that he be fully evaluated. There could possibly be some sort of congenital problem or malformation that no one has picked up on yet. This was the case with my youngest son.Good luck and please keep us posted. You sound like a really wonderful grandma.marcia

I agree that you should seek out another opinion right away. as you know babies scream because they have no other way to say that something is wrong. my baby is colicky still at 4 months but now that we started solids he is turning around drastically. obviously it is way too early for your GS, but sometimes it is something as simple as that. Kiera recommended the gripe water as do I. it can really make a huge difference. but at this point, it would seem to me that he needs some better professional help than home remedies. not only should you be agressive about this for your grandson, but i am sure his mommy is about ready to fall apart from all the worry and stress. remember that doctors are human too, that is why they call it a "practice" maybe the way this doctor does things is not in your best interest? don't worry about hurting a doctors feelings, just get that baby better!

It will not hurt to try soy formula, and you don't need to ask the doctor to do it. Get the kind with ARA & DHA with Iron.

I don't understand why more infants aren't put on soy right away.

We had the same problem for the first three weeks. Son screaming all the time, like he was in pain. Got him on soy and he was a new baby after that.
