View Full Version : im 17 and got a huge problem

Well to start off im 17 and only weigh 61kg (136lbs) and im wondering if i got some eating disorder or something.
Ive tried to gain weight but i just cant. Im eating so much more than i used to. Ive even been taking these high protien shakes (3 a day for the past 3 weeks). But i have only gained about 1/2 kg in the last 4 weeks and i know that is pretty bad. Is something wrong with me? My wrists and legs are real thin and its embarrasing to wear shorts or t-shirts and im becomming real despressed over this.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

First of all, how tall are you? I'm 5'4, and when I weigh 136, you can spot me coming a mile away. It really depends on height. From your post, I assume you're really gangly...what you could try doing is working out--not like, to lose weight but to build muscle. All those protein shakes won't do much if you don't work your muscle.

That is not that bad. I'm 5'10" when I was 17 I was probably around 155 or so. I was around 165 before graduating HS. After graduation I started to bulk (muscle) up quite a bit to 185. and then I plumped (fat) to 196. Many people are late bloomers but to get an idea of what you will look like, take a look at your parrents.

goodness gracious! Being skinny is a problem? no, i'm kidding i understand that probably kind of stinks to be skinny. But i as well weigh 136, and i'm 5'7"! It's depressing to the rest of us to hear about your proportions! after all, ask any professional model their height and weight and it will probably be pretty similar to yours. You were blessed with probably some good genes and a darn speedy metabolism. But I bet you your future modeling contract you will not stay this way forever. My family is made up of "late bloomers". Most of us didn't really reach full height or figure until midway through college. The fact you are eating a lot indicates a growth spurt, and definatly no eating disorder. talk to your doc. though just to be sure your thyroid is working alright

eat a big meal before bed, and always eat beyond fullness, and avoid junk foods( cookies,cake,ice cream), mcdonalds and pizza hut is ok if u want to gain weight( fat and muscle,) but stay away from sweets like candy ,cookies ,ice cream stuff like that,of course a few times a week is ok,but i wouldnt go more than 3 servings of those per week

Hi X,
an eating disorder REALLY wouldn't be determined so much by your height and weight, although those are certainly factors. What would be more significant in determining the presence of a disorder would be: 1. your health and 2. your behaviors around/with food.

Having a slender build, be it gangly or petite, is not, in itself, an indicator of a problem. What makes you question the presence of a disorder?

Recently I have been struggiling with the same proble. I am 5 foot 4 and I weighed about 85 pounds about a month ago. But since then, I worked up a routine to build muscle. Everynight before I go to sleep, I work out various muscles and then afterwards I take a protein shake. You have to make sure to take the protein dosage AFTER you work out! Since I started I've already put on 5 pounds.

There are several ways to increase lean mass, which I assume is what you are trying to accomplish. First you must workout the muscle groups which will grow the fastest and give you the most mass (Legs, Chest, and Back). Legs are a good starting point. Leg routine should *always* consist of a set of squats.3 sets Heavy squats 6 to 8 reps per set. Add other leg excercises as you will, but squats are a must. Dumbell and barbell bench presses (incline, flat, decline)for chest *heavy* 6-8 reps. Lat pulldowns and dumbell rows are for back.
Second - Protein. The protein needs to be high quality whey (concentrate or blend) determine the % of protein in your shake by dividing protein (in grams per serving) by serving size (in grams) and multiply by 100. ie: 52g protein/ 75g per serving x 100 = 69% protein (the other 31% is just filler added in). Most good shakes will be 65% to 75% pure, with some as high as 90%, anything less than 65% is not a good protein shake. Have a shake right before bed, as during sleep is when muscle growth occurs. As for during the day you need to increase caloric intake to 1500 to 2000 calories more than your maintenance requirement. Just make sure they are good calories, lean proteins and complex carbohydrates. Depending on your genetics you should be able to pack on major pounds in 5-6 months.

Well... ive been eating more lately, doing more weights and been on the protien shakes for about 2 1/2 months. Sinse my first post i said i weighed 61kg (136lbs) and now im at about 64kg (142lbs). Does that seem pretty slow to you?

I understand your problem. You obviously have a very fast metabolism. So do I. I am 6'1" and about 210lbs. I'm a late developer and stopped growing sometime around my 20th birthday. At that time I weighed about 160. I guess that at 17 I was about the same hieght and weight as you. I remember feeling too thin. I was also a lot weaker than most of my friends. I really wanted to gain muscle but I never could. I would lift weights consistantly and I ate constantly but I never gained an ounce. After I stopped growing, from age 20 to 25 I gained 40 pounds. I still was lifting weights and a lot of that weight was muscle. Since then, I've gained a little fat and probably lost a little muscle, but my weight is very stable. All my life I have had a huge appetite and I still do. It never seemed to have a lot of effect on my weight.

The point of this story is that there is not much you can do to change your body type. I really think that your hieght, weight, and metabolism, etc. at any age are determined by your genes more than anything else. You can try to gain weight by eating more or lifting weights, but until your body is ready, you are not going to gain much. Many people your age are very thin. When you stop growing taller, it is natural to fill out more. I wouldn't get too worried about gaining weight, it will come naturally if it is in your nature. Of course, some people stay thin all their lives and if you are one of them, feel lucky - many people will envy you!

Im also 17, 5' 7" and i weigh about 129 lbs.

I also feel really thin, the trouble i have is that im always hungry, but when i eat, i cant eat much at a time, i get really full eating small meals. I try and eat as much as i can but then i just feel sick. I eat a lot of protein and weight train twice a week now.

the beach.You've solved the problem already
probably by pumping some iron,and your putting some beef on. That's good for you and
your rippling muscled body. Your young still
you still have time to gain weight and flex

I really suggest you by a abook called The Anabolic diet" by Dr.Mauro Di Pasquale.its a book about ganing muscle weight.its really worth buying.look into it.My friend has been using this diet to gain muscle and he has changed his body alot.
