I had flashing lights down my left side at work last Tuesday for a while. After it stopped my eye felt weird, couldn't explain it. Moaned to hubby, who made me see an optician on Friday. The optician said that I had a small retina detachment at the bottom part of my retina and sent me straight to the local hospital with a note, and drawing showing what he had found.

I was at the hospital for 3 hours and had 2 opinions. Basically they both couldn't find the retinal detachment, but said that I had PVD in both eyes. They sent me away and told me to come back in 6 weeks, however, if i get any more 'flashing' to get straight to nearest hospital.

My left eye is really weird, like looking through very dirty glasses and it is making me feel nauseous. Also I can only read for 10 mins or so and then I feel lousy. They gave me a leaflet, which said that floaters and a 'veiling' will gradually disappear with PVD.....

I am really worried that the hospital didn't see what my optician saw. also wonder how long my sight will be like this.

Can anyone help please?????

Thanks

Have you made an appointment with an opthalmologist? Preferably one that specializes in the retina. I, too, had a problem years ago and went to the ER at one of the best eye hospitals in the country. And I saw one of their doctors in a clinic setting, too. Having known my whole life that I was susceptible to retinal detachments I knew this was happening, but all these doctors saw nothing. Said my retina was fine. Except that one week later the retina detached!
So, it may be a good idea to find a specialist and let them check your eyes, too. Always better to be on the safe side of things. Whether it is PVD or something else, it's a good idea to get a second opinion from someone who sees this all the time. ANd they can do much better exams & tests in a office that is equiped for it, than the local hospital setting. (Just my opinion.)

Yes Hellas is exactly right (per usual). When I was in the hospital and having trouble with my eyes they called in an opthomologist but he didn't even have the instrument with him that measures pressure in the eyes. The hospital couldn't find one either.
The ER isn't equiped to handle any problems with the eyes and your best bet is to go to a retinal specialist as Hellas suggests. There they have all the equipment to test and treat.
Good luck!

ER physicians receive no formal training in eyecare.

Often times the staff optometrist or ophthalmologist at the local hospital has to deal with a poorly equipped examination room.

You should seek the opinion of a retinal specialist asap.
