My hair is naturally salt & pepper now [DARK brown & gray] For the last 8 years or so now I’ve been using red but thinking of trying blond… Someone has told me, I need to first “strip” the old color out of my hair? What the heck are they babbling about?

Hi Penny ann, I had the color stripped out of my hair about 5 months ago. I was just horrified my hair has never been the same. If i were you i would just wait until it grows out, don't do anything drastic like i did.

I agree. Letting your hair color just grow out would be easier and also a lot less exspensive. A friend of mine had some color stripped out of her hair and she said she'll never do it again. It was a really harsh process and also very exspensive.

Ok and thank you for the advice… BUT that’s not what I need to know… WHAT IS stripping and do I NEED to do it IF I want to try blond? Apparently my friend thinks the blond hair die will fail to take or something if I don’t strip

Striping means to take all the color out of your hair, natural color too as well as dye. Striping is very harsh on the hair. I had to have this done one time, at least was told that is what I needed. After I went thru the process and another color put in my hair, the beauticians all came around my chair and were amazed at the results. Yeah, they all had been waiting to see my hair dissolve off my head. Thank goodness it did not.
You will be better off leaving your hair alone and letting the color grow off. I am in the process of letting my hair grow off and just be salt/pepper. My hair was breaking off at scalp due to chemical damage from using semi-permant color and getting perms. Little short new hairs are growing back in and I am delighted. Looked like I was going to be bald until I finally figured it out.
Letting the color grow off is better than letting chemical damaged hair grow off. At least you can do something with your hair in the process of growing off, but, it is difficult to do anything with hair that is chemically damaged.
