Just wondering if anyone knows if it is safe to go under anesthesia with Cardiomyopathy? I am going to have an egg retrival done real soon and I am very nervous about it. I don't see my cardiologist until 9/16. Also I have to take some ivf medications like birth control pills for a week, does anyone have any experience with this condition and these issues? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I am soooo stressed right now and I am sure that can't be good for this condition.

Hello Eeyore1973,
You really need to consult with your cardiologist about any risks for you associated with cardiomyopathy and having a general anaesthetic. Much depends on the nature and extent of your cardiomyopathy, and any complications you have from this heart muscle disorder (atrial fibrillation,heart failure, impaired diastolic function for example). The doctors doing the egg retrieval procedure, especially the anaethetist, would have to be aware of your cardiomyopathy, ideally liaising with your cardiologist. So you will have to have (at least) the advise of your cardiologist.Good Luck and stop worrying - see a cardiologist instead, or speak with the anaethetist asap.

What type of cardiomyopathy do you have? I have a peripartum cardiomyopathy. I only have a slight case, but none the less, it scared me like crazy.

I have hypertropic cardiomyopathy, which is believed to be caused by genetic mutation(s). I could tell you a lot about this, but it is not really relevant to your condition.I am sorry to hear about how worried you are about your situation.Also taking the birth control medication (hormones) can play havoc with your emotional state. Really, to find the answers to the specific medical questions you ask about (quite reasonably) you need to see a cardiologist and someone that knows your medical history and current "status". I wish I could be of more help, but you need specialist medical advise to find out your situation, and hopefully allay your fears.Please let us know how you get on.
