Hey everyone,

I am a 23 year old female with a 5 year history of palpitations and a 1 year history of tachycardia. I take atenolol 50mgs a day to control the tachycardia, and my high bloodpressure that runs in the family.

My question is this:

I don't really seem to have problems with palps during the day. The Atenolol does a pretty good job of controlling them. I maybe feel 1 or 2 a day at the most...

But I noticed lately that when I am intimate with my boyfriend, and I am at the "high point" in our lovemaking, I seem to get palpitations really badly. Like one after another. They were actually so bad tonight that I had to stop in the middle of everything just to try and breathe....

I am now scared to do anything else with him from the fear of what my heart will do...

Does anyone else have this problem? Or can anyone suggest what I can do so that my boyfriend and I can still be intimate together?

Thanks for your help!

Well, when making love and particularly shortly before climaxing, we tend to "hyperventilate". Your changed breathing pattern could very well be the cause of your palpitations. When you say palps, do you mean arrhythmias? Might be embarassing, but I'd ask a doctor.
And try not to breathe too quickly when making love, might not work, but it's worth a shot...

I'm a 24 year old female and I have the same problem sometimes. And, about a month ago I went into supraventricular tachycardia during sex and had to go to the ER. So I sympathize with you, but I don't have a solution :-(

When both sexes get into the climax of orgasm heart rate and respiratory rate speeds up to a max. palpitations are normal during and especially right after orgasm as your heart supplies vital nutrients to that certain area.

I often get a real irregular beat at that time. Maybe multifocal premature beats? It can be alarming, but I chose to ignore as they pass when the moment does and nothing extreme has ever happened. Mind you, I have had many the cardiac tests and am under the care of a cardio, so that gives me some peace of mind about it. If you haven't, you might want to ask your dr. about it. It wouldn't do any harm to look into it.
