Hi. My name is Ryan. I am 30 years old, and have been smoking since I was 14. I now smoke close to 2 packs a day, have a terrible smokers cough, and am told I now have bronchitis on top of having asthma. My cough is worse at night, and when I wake up in the morning. I didn't realize it got so bad, but people around me are now saying stuff all the time. Its so embarresing. I feel totally addicted, and helples and vulnerable. It's now making me sick, and I need to try to quit very soon. Any sugestions?

plc...there you go! Yes, the patches DO work very well...I quit with the patch 22 months ago, after 30+ years of smoking--chain smoking at that! I don't believe cutting back works very well either...just prolongs the agony, and makes the cravings worse.
carefreeguy--please don't feel totally helpless. If you think that way, you will never quit. Start thinking in a more positive mode, IE; "I can and will do this, dammit!" Go purchase some patches, or gum, or talk to your doc about getting on Zyban/Wellbutrin...it works well too. Come to this board (everyday if you have to), and post, vent, check in with how it's going. Quit telling yourself you can't do it--YOU CAN!!! AND YOU WILL!!! Now just GO DO IT!! Be strong in mind and spirit!! Read a bunch of posts here, you'll see, it's not a simple thing for anyone, but SO many people have done it! If you REALLY want to do it, you will, no matter what. You have to have that determination to do it more than anything...100%...cuz if you don't have that, then nothing is going to help you. Read these posts, go to the archives and read, read, read....you'll get ideas, and lots of inspiration! (See how others did it)
Good luck! :)
