View Full Version : Low carb foods

Hi everyone!!!

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck finding low-carb foods in stores (health foods stores, etc). I have been low-carbing it for about a month and a half and it's going very well. I am very stringent during the week, but during the weekend, I allow myself some pasta, rice, etc. However, I would like to incorporate the low-carb versions of these foods to continue low-carb eating on the weekends.

Problem is...I've found plenty to choose from on-line, but the food is so expensive already and we're on a tight budget, so the shipping and handling charges make it too outrageous.

Has anyone had any luck??? Or is on-line my only option??

Thanks in advance!

I lo-carb without buying any specialty items...you can do it without that unless your heart is set on pasta and rice and even then just incorporate it into your diet...If you are unsure on some foods then look up carbohydrate counters or carbo calculators on the web and you should find some helpful suggestions...
might even find a recipe to make your own pasta. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, there is actually a site out there for low carb that charges no shipping no matter what you buy. I can't tell you thename, cause we are not allowed, but put low carb free shipping into your search engine and you may find it. You might have to weed out alot of places that say free shipping, because alot say free, but then you have to buy a certain amount of food. The actual real deal is in there though so try and find it. Let me know if you do. if you can't, i can try to be more specific about what to put in the search engine.

Actually, yeah, if you are not opposed to making your own pasta, what you can do is go find a recipe that you like, and exchange half of the flour in it with protein powder (whey, unflavored)

you can do this with pretty much any recipe (well, within reason) Replace half of the flower in pancakes with vanilla protein powder (or plain) throw in a bit of cinnamon...tastes great.

I sometimes do this with oatmeal raisin cookies, using a little apple sauce instead of all that butter. Good snack, though not ultra low carbo...but high in fiber.

Athough I havent found any pastas, I have found low carb "tortillas" and even low carb chips at grocery stores before. And one thing that a lot of people don't know about, is that most grocery stores hire people to _get_ specialty items for their customers. They would rather keep your business and make a little profit than have you go somewhere else. Just try asking. It can't possibly hurt!

Good morning everyone!

Thanks for the responses...

shel, I was able to find one site so far that had free shipping, but you still have to spend over $20. No luck on the totally free shipping yet. Any more clues would be helpful.

On that same note, I found a health food store near me (Milwaukee) and they carry many of the low carb products I've heard about. However, as usual, they're extremely expensive. And on my limited budget, I cannot really justify spending all the money. My fiance nearly blew a gasket when I told him the Keto pasta was $5/lb. He couldn't understand how they could charge, or why I would buy, pasta for over 5 times as much as the normal stuff we buy (good 'ol rotini, 79 cents a box). Then, I put on a dress that I got two weeks ago for our upcoming honeymoon and it finally fits really well!!!! ...I did a little fashion parade for him and he was shocked...He said he notices I'm losing weight, but he knew how the dress fit 2 weeks ago and then saw how it fit last night - the difference is very noticable. For the first time since this low-carbing began, he told me he is really proud of me and loves the way I look. His compliments all came without invitation. It was so nice, and very encouraging (not to mention, very rare)! It's important to me that he thinks I look good, and I know he loves me no matter what (I've yo-yoed anywhere from 135 - 180 during our 6 1/2 year courtship and his affections have never faltered)... and his support makes all the difference. He told me if I wanted to, I should go buy the pasta and whatever else would make this easier for me - he just wants to support me. What a sweetie. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Definitely doesn't mean he's happy about $5 a box though... LOL I think I'm too cheap to buy the products though... I'm doing rather well on my own.

Whew!!! What a long-winded post - Sorry for boring you all to death. Just wanted to let you know that I was able to find some things.

And Shel...again, any more hints would be helpful. The store was price a bit higher than I've seen on-line, and if I could find no-shipping, it may be worth trying out!

Thanks!

OK, I'll get back to you in a short time I have to go through my lists. . you have to also remember when your buying this food , that it is higher, ..........but you also are not buying yourself all the other foods you used to buy. Are you subtracting this from the cost of the new stuff?

i mean what I save on cheezit's alone makes up for half the cost. The other half is made up from the soda I no longer purchase. Try adding up the cost of all the foods you don't buy now, and the results might surprise you. Depending on your eating habits, you could actually be spending LESS. Also when you buy stuff like low carb pasta, remember that you are only having a serving at a time, instead of filling your whole plate like you probably used to do. You have to ADD UP EVERTHING.

Sorry , the starch blockers don't catch it all no matter what you keep telling everyone. You can even go to the site to buy them and they tell you this.

Mercedes Congrat's on looking good in that dress girlfriend and I know how much my hubbie's praise and support mean to me so I bet you were walking on sunshine that night. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
Now Andrea. Honey, sometimes I just don't understand you. You won't spend $5 on something lo-carb that will help you keep your levels stable but you will spend $35 on something that is going to let you binge. Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of the WOE?

What opinion?????Didn't you actually read the information with the starch blockers? or do you know more then the company that makes them?

good job M-girl..that is great...and you know do NOT mess up what is working...if this is working then stick to it...great idea from shifty .. always good advice from that corner...
Don't add any supplements if you aren't taking any now...you would want to go off them eventually and although some help and there will always be two sides to all of these pills and herbs and stuff IF you are having SUCCESS without them...then no need...you are already learning to change your lifestyle and that is the key..change of eating habit and lifestyle...taking a pill isn't going to help that...
and.........I am not gonna add to much to this debat but I do want to point out that some of these "blocker" can also flush the good vitamins and minerals your body would like to hold onto...and there is no way they will get everything....but might get some, but if you are taking things away ...some good is going too...
Something that isn't discussed much here is our gallbladders...many are affected by all this "diet stuff"...did you know that was one of the reasons one of the major diet centers changed their food?? there was a correlation between their foods found and the number or their patients that were having to have their gallbladders removed......might be a coincidence..but we have some vital organs we are playing with here when we change our eating habits, take a pill, etc....just be sure you read up and really know what you are putting in your body and if you can accomplish without then that is the best way....

Thanks for the responses everyone!

As for the cost of the foods - that's a funny thing. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif Until about a month and a half ago, my fiance and I never grocery shopped. I couldn't find my way around a supermarket if my life depended on it...our refrigerator consisted of condiments (for him, I'm anti-condiment) and beer. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif But we did eat out a lot and that got to be kind of pricy... We have started grocery shopping to get better foods (when I started low-carbing it) but he still gets the good old pizza rolls, etc, and all that adds up. (I try to get him to make better choices, but he's never hounded me a day in our lives, I won't even tread near that territory with him.)

So we are saving a little on the eating-out costs (even then we didn't eat out expensively - Subway for the most part), but I still go out for lunch (and get the trusty chicken salad w/vinegar), we still buy food for both of us, and now adding the exhorbant cost of low-carb foods seems a bit much. We've already had to make so many cuts and sacrifices budget-wise... I'm sure I'll try some of these foods to find out what they're like, but I'm doing okay now. Just looking for a little more variety. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif And SherryA, you're right...we may come out ahead in the long run by buying these foods - but I'm afraid of buying some of this food, spending a chunk of change, and hating it. Then it just sits there. But I suppose every once in a while you have to bite the bullet (a low-carb bullet to be exact...teeheehee) and just try something different.

Thanks again guys, you're all great!!!

I've been low-carbing for the last 2 weeks now (lost 5 pounds and 8 total inches!!) I found a great web site devoted to low-carbing and it has some really good recipes! The address is www.lowcarbluxury.com (http://www.lowcarbluxury.com)
By the way, I live in Waukesha, WI and the sugar substitute that they talk about on that website called Splenda is available at Pick n Save.

joanieg,

Thanks for the word on Splenda at Pick N Save...there's one right around the corner from me; I'll have to check it out!

Small world, isn't it? I live about 10 minutes from Waukesha...

And BTW, the mods are very strict on the "no promoting websites" rule... Just wanted to give you the heads up in case you didn't know about it. Don't want to see anyone get scolded! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Take care!
