View Full Version : Testing reminder tool

Hello. I'm new to the boards  . I would appreciate some help. I need to monitor my blood sugar levels one hour after each meal (in addition to morning fasting).

I won't remember when the hour comes up because my life is very busy and I have a small child (so far, I missed tons of testings because by the time I look up, it's way over an hour - sometimes three). I looked into timer watches for diabetes and other medication reminder watches, but they are all set up so that you set alarms for specific times during the day.

That's not what I need since i eat at different times of the day. I need something that I can press when I'm done eating and it will time an hour and then sound the alarm (or vibrate). I would prefer a watch because anything else I'll forget where I put it or won't hear it if I'm in a different room.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks you so much.

If you are at home then why not just set the oven timer for an hour right after you eat? Mine will continue to buzz until I turn it off. Even if I'm doing laundry in the basement and don't hear it right away, I'm sure to hear it as soon as I come up the stairs. Don't know about anything portable though. Maybe someone else here knows something about that.

Hi there, Snowbaby...
All require some amount of self-dicipline, but a few suggestions......
1) kitchen timer (on the oven or the portable kind you can bring from room to room or wear on your belt)
2) alarm clock
3) wrist watch (the sport kinds have many features from stop watches to set timers)
4) TV (some TVs have that sleep feature where it'll go off after an hour)
5) computer pop-up reminders (using a calendar/appointment software). I actually used this one quite a bit at work.
6) make an appointment with your testing time (like you would a doc's appt).
7) ask friends/family that you have to test at such-and-such a time and they can help you remember (my husband is good at this :-)

Curious why you test an hour after eating when all that I've been told and read about indicates testing 1.5-2 hours after meals? I would think that you'd be OK to test within the 2 hour mark if you miss the 1 hour mark. I test 7-10 times/day now and many days feel like I'm constantly checking the clock but I have taken a vested interest in trying to make sense of my numbers and rate it's (testing) importance high in my daily routine.

Cheers and good luck,
- Vikingirl

I have gestational diabetes (pregnancy-induced) so I'm not sure if that's what makes the difference between testing after one hour versus two.

Your doctor may want to know how high the BS peaks before it starts to come back down. The 2 hr test will indicate whether BS returned to normal after a meal. If you test at 1, 2, 3, 4 hrs after some meals you may find the peak takes place much later than 1 hr. depending what foods you consumed, portions, fat, etc.

I use a small kitchen timer with clothespin type magnetic fastener on the back. Wear it on a chain around my neck or in my pocket or clip it to a waistband or clip on clothing where I do not knock it off. A good place is center of bra, that is if neckline is low enough to reset. I like the timer with a memory, set memory for 1 hr, stop, click memory, then start when needed next time.
