Sometimes, not everytime, I take a shower my whole body starts to itch really bad and nothing will make it stop, the itching goes away after about 20 min. This started up about 3 months ago, and I thought I might be allergic to dye so I changed all of my shower stuff to no dye no perfume, same with my laundry detergent and the problem still continues. I stopped using my loofa and started using a washcloth, that seemed to help a little bit, but it still happens every 2 or 3 weeks and the itching is aganizing.....someone please help!!

Well, unfortunately, I cannot really help, but when I saw this....along with some other recent posts, it's just amazing how many things I can relate to exactly...kinda makin me remember how many problems I have!! Anyways...I get the same thing, and it used to be a lot worse.....I would go crazy, practically wanting to scratch the skin right off my body after a shower...and I would seriously be going nuts around my place itching all over...laying down on the bed, itching some more....standing up, more itching....sitting down, same thing, until...like you said, about 20 minutes of that hell, it goes away.
So, if it makes you feel better, you're not the only one....I think my sister has the same thing too, and she went to see a dermatologist about it, and he basically just gave her some cream or lotion that helped, but I don't think it went away completely. I noticed that when I use regular bar soap, like Jerg ens, or something that has no scent, that it isn't as bad.....It seems when I use body wash soap, that's when it's the itchiest. I dunno what this is exactly, but I plan on seeing a dermatologist about it too, and I may not let him get off as easily as my sister let em. muahhhaaaa
Lets just hope it's not like ticks or fleas or scabies or something like that....but, for me, this has been going on for a long time...and I think if it were one of those things, I would have died or had seious effects by now to know if it was....oh well....I'd recommend going to a dermatologist as well, and looking into this issue. Best of luck to you...I feel your pain! I know it sucks really bad! But, lets hope we'll find out what it is!

I have a theory. I wonder if it would happen if you took an anti histamine like benadryl a wile before your shower. You don't need to be allergic to anything else for this to happen either. I think heat can cause histamine release in some peoples skin causing itching.
Good luck

I usually take lukewarm if not cold showers about 90% of the time, so I dont think its the heat. I did take benadryl once when it was happening and it helped a little but I cant live my life on that stuff, it makes me so drowsy.

Well, in my case, I know it's not from taking anything, like an anti-hystamine before showering, cuz' as far as I know, I am not allergic to anything, so I don't take anything like that. It just seems to happen....I take a shower, get out, and start getting itchy all over, but like I said, it's been getting better over the past year or so, and I'm not sure if it's the soap that I've been using or what, but it's definitely not as bad as it used to be. I don't know what the cause of this is, but I hope to find out soon. The best thing to do I suppose, is go to a dermatologist and get checked out.

Well...
I too, have a big problem with my skin itching after a shower as well. I itch and itch and than I put lotion on my legs and arms and it usually helps.
It doesn't happen all the time just here and there and the problem is - is that you never know when it creeps up on you.
Too many people have this problem, you think someone would know the cause. I don't believe in it being the soap or water.
Any suggestions or help, please keep us posted.
THANKS!

Do all of you who have these symptoms have a water softener? I have noticed that if I go on vacation and stay at a place with "hard" water, after a couple of days I will start to itch and have to keep applying creams. The itching is less intense with soft water. Also, does anyone notice this happening after being in the sun?

Yes, I agree, something needs to be done, some resolution or some answer! It happens about 80% of the time for me, and like I have said before, certain soaps seem to be better than others, but maybe I'm just trying to think that it's true.....cuz' maybe like one person stated, it could be the water. I've heard that before, but I dunno. Oh well, hopefully someone comes up with an answer one of these days. I know I'm going to see a dermatologist about it as soon as I can.

Perhaps you might consider the water afterall. You should check with your water company and see what they may have added around the time you began itching. Also see what they may have added for some time back, as you may have developed an allergy after being exposed to it for the long term. It may not even be anything that has been added but something that is in the water naturally in "acceptable" or "safe" levels. Water companies must test regularly for various toxins and organic material and provide the results if asked, I think. If you have your own well, you can send a water sample to a lab for testing. It may help give a clue as to what you are reacting to.

Hi there......not a bad idea at all, I'll have to do just that, and contact the water company and ask them a few questions to try and get more to the bottom of this issue. But, on the other hand, I'm not so sure if it's the water that's the problem, than just an issue with my skin, because I've been at this place, which has city water, not a well, over a year and even before I came here, I was in a completely different city and area, and it was the same, itching after a shower, sometimes not as bad as others, but the mojority of the time, it is so annoying and irritating.
Either way, that was good advice, and I will try it out and see what I can find out and return, with hopefully some possible answer, if it will help. Thanks

Try taking your towels and wash cloths to the laundrymat. Wash them two or three times (hot or cold water), most importantly, without detergent. The soap residue (detergent) is reactiving on your wet skin and could be causing the terrible itching. You need to get the build up of soap out of the towels.
You may be suprised to see all the soap in the wash water even though you didn't put any in.
Also, a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle will cut the soap scum and make them towels soft and fluffy. Believe me, the odor will evaporate.
Everyone like those thick, soft towels and I totally avoid them. You can't ever get the soap out. I even bring my own (cheap, thin) towels when I travel to the best hotels. I learned my lesson.
Good luck and let me know how you all make out. If anything, there should be a big improvement.

Hey Notunderstood,
Let me know if you go to the dermatologist and what he actually says. it would be interesting to know.
Yesterday and today after I took my showers I itched for 20 minutes after and it just drives me nuts!!!
I even tried just damp drying and it did not help.
Thanks everyone for your replies, it enlightens us to know what everyones thoughts or fixes are.

Say I had this too. I have an extremely rare disorder called mastocytosis. My problem is much more serious than that any of you. Everyone has what they call mast cells all over including their skin. With my disorder I have too many. Anyway they are part of your immune system. Mast cells carry histamines to help fight allergies, infections or whatever. When we cut ourselves as it heals, it itches too. That’s why in some people when exposed to too much heat or sun or even too cold for some they can itch. That is from mast cells releasing histamine naturally in the skin too. I believe with me that temperature changes from showers led my over active abundant immunes system to treat a hot shower like I was a burn victim. I don’t think anyone here has my disorder. It would show up on the skin too from having too many mast cells. I still believe some of you may be describing some type of histamine release. My itching from showers stopped after I was put on many anti-histamines to fight my disorder. I hope this helps somebody.
