my granded has got to have triple bi-pass surgery and i dont no what it is, can someone please explain to me what it involves and what the after effects are.

Triple by-pass means your granddad had 3 arteries in his heart that arent working right, like an oil line to a car,if one line is blocked or damaged,car wont run correctly.
It usually takes 4-5 hours, then he will be in ICU,Intensive care , so the nurse may monitor.
Then maybe after 2 days ,his own room, normally in hospital about 5 days.
When he gets home he will be unable to be by himself for a few weeks, no heaving lifting and a lot of rest.
He should be himself in about 3 months, just kind of achy sometimes.
The drs will monitor his #'s, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.
But he should be fine, this has been done for years. Hope this helps you as I saw no-one had answered you. Kempy

Sounds like you were given some sound advice . It really isn't that bad , I had 7 bypasses at the same time. I had surgery on a Monday and went home on that Sat. I was kept an extra day because they thought I may need a pacemaker also but it turned out I didn't until two years after . This does not mean everyone with surgery needs a pacemaker. These types of surgery's are anymore while all surgery's have some danger , they are most times no more dangerous then tonsils or appendix. Medicine has come such a long ways . I was 49 when I had my heart attack and 7 bypasses but my father in law was 70 and had 6 bypasses, and he is out everyday putting around and when he mows he has three achers to mow. During the summer he is in the swimming pool everyday. I hope this has helped you to be more at ease.

thank-you for the information, it has put me more at ease and i now understand what happens. he is 70 and hasn't had a heart-attack, but he has got to loose at least 1 stone before the operation can take place but he can't exercise because of all the tablets he has to take. they have taken him off the steroids and say that now he is off of them, he will find it easier to loose it but say that there will still be a risk that he won't make it off the table. is there anything that the doctors can do to help him?

There is always a risk, but the risk is fairly minimal. he has a higher risk of a severe heart attack. Honest, Ive had a quadruple (all 4 arteries) and a valve replacement, granted I am younger, but still he should be fine.
There are medications that help, but they are long term and drs may feel by-pass is the only remedy available.
Educate yourself on the histories of by-pass and then be there for your Granddad. Wish you well, Kempy
