View Full Version : Problems with shaving...nothing works

I'm putting this on this forum because I feel that more people who check this forum know more about shaving the legs.

I really need help, nothing I've tried works. I'm a guy and I would like to get rid of my leg hair, because I don't like how leg hair looks on me and I'd like to wear shorts outside again someday(I haven't since I was like 10 years old). But I must be cursed or something because nothing I've tried works on my shins/calves. I can shave my thighs, my stomach, my underarms and my forearms and even my pubic hair without much irritation at all, especially if I take my time and do it right, but no matter how hard I try my shins can't be shaved without something going wrong. Sometimes I cut myself even though I'm extremely gentle, sometimes if I get the hair off I start breaking out on my legs even though I clean afterwards, and even if neither of those happen, I end up with black dots all down my legs. I believe they are my pores, though I don't know. I've been trying some new pore refining soaps and lotions, but no good.

And then, after about 2-3 days the hairs start growing back. If I don't shave, it starts itching, but even if I do shave somehow I ALWAYS cut myself, or break out. This is very very frustating.

I've also tried waxing, though only home waxing because I don't know where to get it done professionally, and I've tried Veet hair removal lotion, which didn't do ANYTHING, and Nair for Men, which didn't do anything other than make me go into an itch vest so bad I almost started crying.

Again, that stuff works everywhere else. Infact Nair worked amazingly well on my arms/stomach/thighs, I'm very happy with out it turned out. However, my lower legs had no results. Does anyone know what to do? I don't want to have to shell out the money for the laser or electrolosis, I've heard bad things about them. Any help would be appreciated, thanks...

Only advice I would give you is that learn to love that leg hair! Many women find it a turn on. Both of my sons have a lot of leg hair and it doesn't hold them back from wearing shorts...in fact, it's very normal!

id have to agree with sunnydaze..i mean..men we basically not meant to shave there legs. you legs just become irritated easily. id have to say..leave it at that. don't shave. i really dont know what else advice to give about this. its a weird situation..but are your legs really that bad enough that you cant wear shorts? :-/

Yeah right -_- I'm never showing my legs if they have hair on them, I'll sew pants to my skin if I have to. I don't care what women find attractive, I want to find myself attractive. You have to love yourself before you can love others right?

And women aren't "meant" to shave either. Plenty of guys shave, haven't you ever seen a bodybuilder? Even the most masculine of guys shave. It's a preference. I guess I'm just one of those unlucky people...

I didn't mean to offend either, if that's what I did. I guess I just don't understand why this bothers you so much; that's all.

No advice on shaving except that when you get older it probably won't be that noticeable. Hope you find some answers.

i am female and i have to shave my legs everyday. you probably shave your face every morning. hair grows fast with shaving. waxing yourself is very difficult to do. find someone who will wax you. you can get professionally waxed by an esthetician. i see an esthetician for my brazilian waxes. most salon and day spas wax just about every body part.

i have an aversion to body hair. i will eventually get everything lasered. laser hair removal can greatly reduce the amount of hair after about six sessions. i have an aversion to my own body hair but i too find it sexy on a man.

It's ok, don't worry about it. I'm glad you realized it, most people are very unsympathetic with me usually.

I've never compared my leg hair to anyone, but as far as I'm concerned it doesn't look out of the ordinary. I just want to have smooth legs. I'm very in touch with my feminine side. I get so jealous when I see women with smooth legs, wearing short shorts and skirts. Granted, I wouldn't wear anything like that out of risk of being shot, but if I could wear shorts and be confident in how my legs look that would be a close second. Not to mention I also dress up as certain characters at conventions that show their legs. I managed to get away with it last time because the boy I dress up as wore thigh length clothing and knee high socks.

Anyway, that's it, I just want smoother legs. I'm really hurt to think that it's really this hopeless just because I'm a boy.

I let my hair grow completely before using wax, but it only ended up just making the hairs shorter. In addition to this, it made my poors really red.

Nair worked WONDERS on my thighs and arms. I absolutely loved how smooth it was and will probably do it again. It's just my lower legs, I don't see why they're so resistant to hair removal. I'm wanting to try Nair again there, though I'm a little gunshy after the horrifying itching I got last time.

Soap and water huh? I've been told that's like the worst thing I can use. If I get brave enough I'll try it, thanks for the advice. Though, pardon my ignorance, but what is a foil razor? I've never heard of that.

I've always thought soap and water should work well because you're cleaning as you shave. But I don't know. We'll see. I also think I'm going to ask a doctor. This can't be normal, it makes no sense that I can shave ANYWHERE on my body, even my face and my pubic hair, the two most sensitive areas, without any irritation, year my lower legs have a cow if I try anything.

I have very sensitive skin on my shins. I like the intution razors. That's the one with the stuff around the blades that foams up as you shave. I have to use alot of lotion and exfoliate.

I end up with black dots all down my legs. I believe they are my pores, though I don't know. I've been trying some new pore refining soaps and lotions, but no good.
I am assuming that you have dark hair? The black dots are where the end of the cut hair is visible at or just below the surface of the skin. I don't know that any type of pore refining product will help, because it isn't really the pores, it is the hair follicle.

The closer a shave you can get, the more this should be minimized. A high quality (i.e. - expensive) razor might help. Theoretically, waxing should be the most helpful for this, as the hair is completely removed. Personally, I have never found home waxing to work. A salon wax is a thousand times better, but it is expensive. I wax, and I will never go back to shaving. But it is a pain because you have to wait for the hair to grow out in between.

To find a place that does it, just open the phone book to "salons" and start calling. Most places that advertise themselves as spas or day spas will do it. And anywhere that advertises bikini waxes for women will probably do it, too.

If you do want to keep shaving, have you tried using hair conditioner? Rub it on your legs like you would shaving cream and then shave. That helps sometimes.

Good luck.

Try using baby oil when you shave your legs, it helps with irritation. There is nothing wrong with a man shaving anything on his body, you are right, what makes you feel good is the most important of all. If baby oil doesn't work, then try using baby bath or baby lotion, use good razors like Gillette for men, you know the navy blue throwaways? Those work the best for me, and one more thing, men's hair on their legs are more coarse then women's leg hair, go to a sex shop and buy something called coochy. Its for shaving all parts of the body, it works wonderfully on all areas and doesn't leave you with a nasty rash either...Hope this helps you, good luck!

A sex shop o_o ....I don't think so. I don't think there even IS a sex shop anywhere near where I live, maybe in the city though. >< I don't want to go in there though.

My hair isn't very dark at all, as far as I've noticed. I haven't ever seen a girl with hair on her legs, but I do know that my hair isn't nearly as thick and coarse as my guy friends. I always thought it would be EASIER for me to shave because I don't seem to have much body hair at all. I think I might be exfoliating wrong though, that might be a problem.

I'll try all those things over the next few months. Here's hoping something works. I'm not trying waxing again, and I tried Nair on my legs again but this time it actually started buring, so no go on that. Oh well. Something has to be able to work.

Have you tried an electric shaver? Just an idea. Might be easier to use everyday, and you wont get nicks and cuts from it. Good Luck!!

I thought electric razor's irritated more and didn't cut as close. I've never tried one, that's just what I heard.

Have you tried a product called Nads? (there are cheaper brands too, but that's the most well known) It is this sticky goo made from sugar. It works the same way as waxing... sticks to the hair and pulls it out. I used to use it and it does work really well, pulls out the entire hair, and is not irritating (I can't use Nair, etc because my skin gets really irritated.) The drawbacks are that it makes a sticky mess everywhere (but it's easy to clean up...), is sort of time consuming, and you have to wait for the hair to get long before it will work.

Tyoka, greetings from another man that hates his body hair, and as you can tell from my user name, have taken appropriate actions to correct it.

My advice, is to get into the phonebook, and look up salons offering waxing, massage, and other services falling under "full service." All you have to ask if is if the aesthetician services men as well as the ladies, and you will get a fast yes or no. Usually, it will be yes because of the gender discrimination thing. Find out how long that person has been doing waxing, and give it a try. I used to shave, but got fed up with the time involved in maintenance. I get waxed every 5-6 weeks, and when it regrows, it is finer, and less noticeable. There isn't a thing wrong with a guy wanting to get rid of unwanted hair! Give it a try, the worst thing that can happen, is you discover whether or not it works for you.

I would like to wax, but even if it does work, I would hate having to wait so long to do it again. I mean, what do you do, just not wear shorts during those weeks?

I've been considering something. Well actually, I'm going to do this anyway, but I'm wondering if it will help my problem. I use to consider getting SRS(sexual reassignment surgery), because I had a lot of problems with my gender. Well, eventually I realized I don't want to become a girl, but I definitely don't want to be masculine. So I was going to take these pills(for now, there's another option which is a bit more drastic) that block the effects of testosterone in my body. Among the effects this has, people have reported having finer and thinner body hair. I'm just wondering, would this help me maybe?

I wear shorts in the summer, or whenever weather is nice. As far as the waiting goes, you'll have to wait, because it takes a while to grow back in! Wax pulls the hair out by the root, so when it grows, a new root bulb must be produced, and then the hair shaft has to grow out past the skin's surface. That process won't happen overnight! As far as the hormone treatment goes, that is a whole different ball game, and have no advice for you along that line.

Ah, maybe I will try it. How much does it usually cost?

Smoothie_Guy
08-19-2005, 01:57 PM
Aestheticians usually charge a certain amount per body part. These numbers won't be accurate, but serve as an example. A full bikini wax (front and rear) could be 50-100 dollars, underarms 25, upper leg/lower leg/full leg...some places will break it down like that will have their own charges. Decide what you want to have done, call around the salons in your area and see if they will service men (I bet they will), find out how much each part is going to cost.

Good luck dude!

^^; I don't have that much money to spare right now. Oh well, I doubt I could get up the confidence just yet, I will try it someday though, I'm sure. Thanks everyone for the advice.
