Hi, my Dad was just diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer yesterday. I guess he is going to have some x-rays and bone scans to make sure it is not elsewhere. The doctor told my parents it was caught early and something about low, medium and high range cancer and said he was medium, Also something about 2%. I know there is cancer in our family. Some of his brothers and sisters have died from cancer(he had a large family 16 brothers and sisters). I am very worried but my mom says that the cure rate is excellent. Does anyone know more and about what my dad may have to go through? Thanks so much.

Prostate cancer caught early (if actually caught early) has a very good prognosis. Most people will live a decade with it without any treatment. Those who have treatment (based on age, pyshical condition, etc) can either be cured or live much longer. However, initial diagnosis of a cancer is often wrong, and sometimes "early stage" turns in to TERMINAL in a matter of a few additional tests. Hang in there, and wait for the results.

Guide to Surviving Prosate Cancer is the best source of information about prostate cancer, it's diagnosis and treatment options I have come across. It was written by Dr. Patrick Walsh of John Hopkins University, the pioneer of the open prostatectomy nerve sparring procedure.

Depending on your dad's age, his overall physical condition, his PSA level, Gleason score, and results of a DRE (digital rectal exam), other tests may be performed as well. From that point the urologist/oncologist will discuss the treatment options with him. They will not make a choice for him, in fact, he may become overwhelmed with information on which treatment option to use, especially if it has been caught early on and is determined to be confined to the prostate organ. It's a tough road to travel, but let him know he is not alone. There are support groups all over the place, tons of resources available, and lots of guys on this Board who will share their experiences, offer their opinions and steer him to lots of good & valuable information. Two very important things for him to do: 1. Become his own health advocate by learning as much about PC as he can, and 2. Be sure to get a 2nd and even a 3rd medical opinion, if need be. Have him join in on this Board. The folks here have been through it all, the good, the bad and all the rest in between and are more than willing to share. Best wishes to him.

Thom in VA.
