don't painkillers irritate the stomach also? Was thinking about asking my Dr. for painkillers for when it gets really bad (not sure if they would even help) but don't want to risk putting anything in my stomach that will make it worse.

No GERD suffer should take NSAIDS (drugs like Vollteril and Ibuprofen) as they can wreak havoc on the stomachs linning. Vioxx was a possible option in that type of class but of cause that's off the market. Celebrex is a similar drug that could be used for shorterm relief on doctors advice, prefferebly with a PPI to ensure stomach protection.
Aspirn is another NO-NO, but Acetamin (paractamol) is not to bad on the stomach and Opiate painkillers are also ok for the stomach, although they form a stuurdy valve back behind :D
