i can't digest my food. I know this sounds wierd.. but it takes weeks for me to go to the bathroom. The only way I can go is by laxatives, or if I overload on extra fiber all bran or eat tons and tons of ground flaxseeds. If I don't do this right after I eat, I get SEVERE gas and bloating.. my stomach gets so distended and it stays this way for like 3 or 4 days until the food passes. it is horrible, someone hellllp

I had this same problem, try taking ginger capsules, you can buy them at Wal-Mart, they worked so well! And trying eating whole wheat food like Whole wheat bread.
If that doesnt work go to a doctor.

Best of luck!

ana,
It sound like you are not intaking enough of the right kind of food that contains fiber in your regular diet!! A person should take 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily and drink enough water to have normal daily BMs.

The fiber needs to be split between both soluble and insoluble.
If you do not have a BM at least every 3 days --- it is considered constipation.

I wish you well----Harry

Are you losing weight? I have this problem too. I am under so much stress, I think I am just not digesting well cause of it. I can't keep my weight up.
She is eating bran, think that is a good fiber. Do they make insoluble/soluble fiber?? What foods are insoluble??

Complete Oat Bran Flakes is soluble and the Complete Wheat Bran Flakes is insoluble fiber. Most fruits and veggies are mostly insoluble fiber including, nuts/seeds.

The grains like rice, corn meal, oat meal, barley without the outter husks are soluble, also root veggies like potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips are mostly soluble fiber. Beans and peas are soluble fiber except the outter parts.

It definately sounds like you are having a motility problem, such as Gastroparesis. This is were the nerves to the stomach have slowed down or have stopped working. Therefore, your food gets stuck in your stomach.

Go to the gastro doctor and ask for a Gastric Emptying Test. This will tell you for sure.

I have had this for 6 years now. I take 6 mg Zelnorm twice a day. The trick is that you have to wait 1 hour after taking a pill before you can eat anything.

By the way, if you do have gastroparesis, the worst thing you can do is eat fiber!! Stay away from everything white (rice, potatoes, bread, dairy), etc. Eat really small meals throughout the day, and chew your food very good.
Hope this helps,
Gingerly

Gingerly,

Well --- what do you eat to make your intestines function?--- does Reglan help?

Dee-- yes I am losing weight, and i know this is part of the problem. I don't eat very much, so when I do I think its a little rough on my insides and the food just ends up sitting in my stomach.

Gingerly-- I would love to see a doctor, except I am too scared/embarrased to tell anyone.. like my dad about this, because he knows i suffer from other 'problems.' Thats not good that I shouldnt eat fiber because currently, its all i eat.. ground flax seeds and all bran extra fiber. So now im hurting myself even more by trying to 'go' agh. it seems like there is no good cure for this unless i go see a doctor.

thank you everyone for your input. I dont know what to do. I'm uncomfortable constantly, I need a cure.
