View Full Version : Reflux Hereditary?

My Mother had gallbladder surgery 3 years ago, and was also diagnosed with reflux/hiatal hernia.

Now, I (at 41) am experiencing discomfort in my breastbone area (between the breasts), and am eating very, very lightly (plain chicken, turkey, water, cheerio's, white bread) because I had several bouts of pain.

Went in for an ultrasound of my abdomen several days ago - and are awaiting results. Endoscopy is scheduled for 9/1.

Does anyone know if Reflux is hereditary?

Anyone who has had an Endoscopy, do you remember anything at all?

I would say yes as well.. my father has been suffering it since when he was in his 20s.. although he does have a hiatal hernia that makes it worse..
I am in my 20s and was diagnosed a few years ago, although I was probably 19 when the problems started.

Yikes, I was afraid of that! My Mom was diagnosed in her late 50's, I am 41. My ultrasound came back as having 'some gallstones', but my Endoscopy is on Thurs.

just to throw in my two cents... i have GERD, gastirtus, hiatal hernia and esophagitus (well, at one time I had all this, I think some has gone away... will find out on the 8th when i have endoscopy #3)...anyhow -
my mom has acid reflux, my sister just got it at the same age I first had symptoms....my grandmother had reflux and a hiatal hernia (and lived to be 98 I might add). and it seems like my dad is developing it!
sooo, I couldn't escape getting it as well!
my boyfriend has it too. If we have kids they are in trouble!
good luck with the endoscopy. I hate procedures, but really...it's over before you know it.

Wendy,

Thanks so much for posting. Sorry to hear your entire Family suffers from this!!! How awful.

I am nervous as can be for the Endoscopy. Never been in a hospital before, have never had a procedure, or iv, nothing.

Yikes!

Did you ever have any problems when the procedure was over?

oh, I totally understand. Im terrible with all procedures. Sometimes I cry! You should have seen me get my first cavity filled. lol.... Im every doctor's nightmare. But, you gotta do it to take care of your body.
Even though I've had two endoscopies so far and a colonoscopy a month ago, and Im still gonna freak out next week! and you know, its normal to be nervous. especially if you havent done this before. but once it's over, you'll see it isn't as bad as you imagined it to be.
Are they putting you out for it? usually you are either out or really sedated (at least in my experience.) My endoscopies have always been with some valium/darvocet mix...but the colonoscopy was with propofol (or something) ...something that totally knocks you out. i was so nervous. I never had anything like that before. but I was fine. I felt a really nice warm feeling, nothing scary at all, and next thing I knew I was waking up and it was all over. Im going to use the same drug for the endoscopy this time around. Im a hard one to sedate and this drug worked much better for me.
I never had any issues at all afterwards. If I remember correctly (its been a few years) but after the endoscopy you might have a tummy ache or gas...uncomfortable, but nothing shocking that I can remember. your doctor will tell you what to expect, if anything.
just have someone to take you home from the hospital...you'll be tired and want to sleep. And the best is, it will be over and you will know what's going on inside so you can deal with it. that's a good feeling.
anyhow - Im sure someone will have to tell me this next week, but you will be fine. it really will be over before you know it :) good luck!!

I just had an ultrasound done and the endoscopy two weeks ago. The results were that I had gallstones, gastritis, a small hiatal hernia and reflux. My Dr. was pretty much saying that along with a hiatal hernia comes reflux.

Anyway, my symptoms were that after eating something that didn't agree with me, I would almost go into an 'attack' - feeling naseaus, sweaty, pain at my breastbone area, etc.

Since going on Nexium (2 weeks now), I feel better, but eat a very low fat diet.

What can you eat or not eat? I find it hard to believe I will never (at 41) be able to have another piece of pizza or dessert.

Thanks,

Lori
