I was just wondering if anyone who has/had costochondritis feels tenderness in there stomach sometimes.
When it first started my Dr said it was acid relux. I had pains right under my sternum to the left. All of a sudden that turned into hurting to breath in my lower left rib along with that one pain on my right rib. Then all of a sudden I felt sharp spikey feelings in my sternum whenever I touched it along with some parts of my stomach.
Mind you I have had ultrasound for the liver/gallbladder etc and nothing came up plus i dont have the typical symptoms
I changed doctors and he looked at my stomach pictures and concluded my stomach was fine and that I am suffering from a condition called costochondritis. He later sent me in for an ultrasound to confrim inflammation in my cartilage and sure enough there was a little.
My question to anyone is this started off really small with a little pain on the right side under my sterum then developed into a sharp pain and is now in a dull moment that seems to come and go during the day all over my ribs and not stay with me 24/7. The pains that I had when touching my stomach have gone and now but it makes me think that maybe i have some occult hernia, my ribs just feel achy and if i press to feel around a little it will hurt but in diffrent places and diffrent times.
Could costo give displaced pain when touching the stomach area?
I also beleive that my problem might also be a little pyschosymatic seeing as how my brother went thru something similair with his prostate and it turned out to be fine with a therapist and paxil. Me and him both have anxiety issues.
I experience this rib pain probably 3 hours after i wake up but during the night i hardly feel anything and when i do feel stuff it is always in a diffrent place. For example it will leave my lower ribs and then hurt my chest. Then it just goes away for a few hours. It doesnt make any sense really. Does anyone think this could be a pyschosymatic problem?
When I was on zoloft the pains seem to be going away faster but I had a bad reaction where I wanted to kill everyone when I was on it, it made me very aggressive.
It has been 10 months now and I am alot better I can now dance again with no pain and big sound systems in concerts dont bother my ribs anymore with the loud bass etc.
If anyone can give me any insight or ideas/suggestions it would greatly be apperciated

I have costro and get the stomach pain also, it waxes and wans. Most of my pain is in the bra strap area, collar bone and upper back. I never know how long I will have it or when it will come or leave. I did not know they could see the inflamation on a ultra sound, my DR. told me there is no test for costro other than pushing in on the sore spots.. Even my sed rate is fine when in a costro flare.

I recently went to the ER because I was getting harp shooing pains in my upper chest, from one side to the other, the pain was like a hard electrical shock. After 18 hours of this I could not take it any longer. I was checked out well and dxed wih costro again.

Hey Linda,
Thanks for replying, this has certainly been a weird condition for me. Sometimes I think i had an out of place rib or some type of hernia then I move to a gallbladder problem. Its bad how I think sometimes even though I have had some closure in the gallbladder case.
Nothing is ever consistant with this other then pain.
Do you get pains in areas regardless of touching them or not? All of my tenderness is going away and iam just left with this achy feeling.
I had chest pains almnost 2 years back once again my Dr thought it was acid reflux but then 2 weeks later I woke up with no pain. Its like it was in the chest then went into remission for a year and a half and now came back in the ribs.
But yes i did some research awhile ago and only one website mentioned ultrasound. But my new doctor insisted that I get one. While at the ultrasound place the tech/dr pointed out to me where the inflammation was and what was going on.
It seemed to come on after huge panic attacks but this time it stayed with me. I just gotta relax a little I guess. But let me know about the tenderness question i asked you.
Thanks a bunch for replying

Yes my ribs are all tender, sometimes I can barely stand clothing touching me.I cannot touch myself and sometimes the entire rib area front and back are so sore I cannot lay or sit against anything. It certainly is not a fun dd. Do you get the sharp shooting pains that come and go really quick, they sure make you take notice to them.
I woud say I am sore and tender 85% of the time, but when the pain kicks in, ouchie.

Hiya,

If you go back on the topics pages to page 5 there are a lot of questions and answers on costo, which may be of help to you. I recently posted quite a few times in response to a member.

I have had this condition for years, and I am at the moment having a full rib cage inflammation problem. I have never had stomach pains with it though.

I do hope you can get the information you need from scrolling back on the topics.

Take care.

I spent 10 years without any costo pain, but this Summer had 2 bouts that hurt like Hell for a couple weeks each.
It comes from the most insipid little turn or reach and tortures the sufferer and then, just as mysteriosly, disappears.
My worst attacks allowed for only a half breath...anything more was torture.

I found ONE correlation though. It attacks when we are sedentary and I got it both times when I took 2 "mini-vacations" from the gym. Maybe 3 weeks each.

I think regular stretching/traction-like excercises are best to keep it at bay. Maybe just as little as lying on one's back on the floor for 10 minutes each day with hands stretched as high overhead (touching floor) as possible is helpful. This gently stretches the rib cage.

But once the pain hits, all you can do is wait it out and use analgesics.

Hey guys thanks for all the info. The tenderness has gone away consideralbly I had it mostly on my sternum and on my sides. It seems like it is going away but really slowly to the point where i dont notice it leaving at all. But if i look back at all my symptoms then yes I am a hell of alot better. It doesnt hurt to breath anymore and I just did Bikram Yoga where they make you stretch in a 120 degree room and I had no problems at all. I really think my anxiety is playing a huge role in this pains from it do run in my family but we get it in diffrent plac. My mother gets migraines and my brother gets prostate pains I guess i get rib pains while my sister just passes out.
When I went to the bahammas 2 weeks ago I had virtually no pain and I was swimming in the ocean and pools aggressivly, then when I got off the plane in NYC again the pains were back.

Oh Lenin I was doing bodybuilding when this hit me. I was going really heavy for awhile with no rest. I would drink coffee when I was tired and would only get a few hours of sleep each night along with anxiety issues the coffee made it worst but kept me awake and alert.
After all these months I wonder if I slipped a rib or something but then again the pain didnt come right away from doing any certain excersize or movement. I was just sitting in a chair one day fixing a computer that went hay wire along with a cup of coffee and then I felt the pain along with a caffiene high that didnt seem to end.
Before that probably a month before all the pain, I had a little pain in the same place but only for 3 minutes or so but it always follow a cup of coffee and something happening that made my anxiety worst.
I stopped drinking the coffee during the winter and it didnt help at all, it seemed to be getting worst up until May where the breathing pains went away and I didnt feel any sharp pains at all.
Now Iam left with a dull ache sometimes it feels burny but I notice thats only when iam around alot of people!!!
I mean if I didnt hurt myself while doing yoga or swimming then could it be pyschosymatic? Either way they are both scary things to deal with. And coffee does make it worst I think its the sudden jolt I get with it. Sort of my old drug of choice.
On the other hand when I drink beer which is probably twice a month the pain goes away which I experiemented with last night.
Next time I get the burny sensation or it decides it wants to act like a tyrant I am going to take an adivan.
BTW does anyone know the diffrence between slipped rib syndrome and costo? Does slipped rib give the same pains?

Lenin
08-24-2005, 10:01 PM
Shard,

One doesn't really "slip" a rib, it can crack or the tendons holding them together can be strained, sprained or torn...the latter of which result in inflammation called costochondritis.

On the other hand when I drink beer which is probably twice a month the pain goes away which I experiemented with last night.

I notice that GIN works the same for me;).

Question ,
Is this the same thing? I can move to look at someone or reach for something and I get this horrible sharp pain and like a knot in the muscle just under my boob. It is hard to breath forget moving at all. Does this sound like costochondrits?
Thanks for any help.

Very seldom does it hurt to breath does that mean I still have costo or should worry its something else.??????
As I said the tenderness is mostly gone and I havent had a breathing attach since March. Now I am left with a pain that dissapears when iam sleeping and comes on during the day with no consistancy. It also disappears in once place and goes to another
Iam starting to think alot of it is in my head now.
Its still scary though cuz the pains are real

Hello Shard,

Please do not get into thinking that you are imagining this pain. From what you have described it is a very real symptom. The thing is though, with costo it eases off and does go away gradually. Sometimes never to return. Other times it can recur. There is the pain there all of the time, it hurts to the touch and things like sneezing, coughing, stretching too far, moving suddenly can cause you extreme discomfort. By breathing what is meant is deep breathing hurts

It is definitely not in you head. One cannot imagine pain such as this. Go back toyour doctor and make him/her aware of what you are going through.

Take care.

My pain does the same, moves and comes and goes. I always lay my newspaper on the hassock to read and I think the leaning flares the costro or trigger points up. This A.M. I had pain in the shoulder into the upper chest and collar bone and than went down my back. I took a nap and when I woke up I had a stomachache, I leaned front and got a real hard pain that came from my stomach up the sterumn, now my entire upper chest is so sore that I cannot even touch it, I know I cannot put a heating pad on I am to sore.

Does anyone else have poor sitting habits as leaning front or on your arms?

My husband is in cardio rehab, he has cervical herniation and nerve damage in his shoulder, he gets this same pain, he had it at rehab today the pt person felt his shoulder toward the back and said he had spasms. she taught him some exercises to help. he told her I had the same pain from fm and costro and she suggested these exercises, she claims they stretch the muscles, chest and back.

1. As Lenin said laying on the floor and stretching above your head, if you cannot lay on the floor stand to do it.
2. Pull your shoulders back as far as you can for 10 seconds and repeat.
3. standing, Put your left arm up on your right shoulder, put your hand as far as you can down the blade. Take your right arm and push on your left elbow for about 4 seconds, 10 times in a row.

You should increase these exercises as you pain allows and also do them more times a day.

Someone try it, I am too sore, Let me know it works, lol.

Love, Linda

Hiya Linda,

I sure hope someone can try these exercises and report back. The thing is though, not to try them whilst you are having problems with costo. It will most definitely make the inflammation and tenderness worse.

I think they could well be of benefit as a day to day loosening up regime. Thanks for sharing these.

I devised an exercise programme for gentle stretching to help keep neck, shoulders, back and upper body supple. If anyone missed it and would like me to post it again, let me know.

Take care.

Hey Goldenwings, yes post your exercises for me, my shoulders and back ache also most of the time. I do have severe arthistis in the thorastic spine.

Is that common with costro to come and go and the pain move throughout the day, also all these sore spots.

You may not be a DR. but I learn more from you than an Dr. all they keep telling me if you press on it and it hurts it is the costro or muscles not heart, so don't worry. I cannot take anti- flamatories, they do a number on my stomach and really do not help anyhow.

Can I be your DR. assit.?

Hiya Linda,

That made me giggle he he !! Course you can be my assist. Seriously now though, we must behave.

With costo, the pain as such doesn't move, but unexpected jerking of the body, or a sudden twist of the body will bring on the pain and of course it feels as they it is moving about, when in fact you have pulled on an inflamed part of your ribs and surrounding area. The cartilege of the ribs is where the inflammation lies, and this gives rise to the horrid discomfort.

The pain is usually worsened by activity or exercise. This is why I said not to overdo any stretching or pushing and pulling of the upper body when you are having costo problems. One of the most common symptoms is that the pain is present when taking a deep breath. This stretches the inflamed cartilage and can cause tremendous pain. More often than not simply touching the area involved will be extremely painful.

I know from experience, as your husband does too - unfortunately - that the pain of a heart attack is not comparable with the pain of costo. So if you do hurt to the touch in your rib area or surrounding soft area, it is definitely costo.

If you sit and don't move too much, then you will not get any horrid pain. It is as soon as you forget to take it easy when moving, that it hits you. If you sneeze, cough, yawn anything that makes you use your upper body, then watch out. It doesn't actually come and go in the respect of being there one day and then not the next, then coming back the day after. It is normally an ongoing thing. When it clears up, it might not come back, or it may recur. Pot luck unfortunately.

At the moment, I have a full rib cage problem with costo, front and back. This was brought on by my latest surgery on my tummy. I, like you though can't take NSAID's so I have to take it easy, very difficult, and I use a topical analgesic spray foam to gently put on the skin so it soaks into the affected cartilege, supposedly anyway.

I am going to go onto a second post to give you the exercises.

Take care.

Hiya Again Linda,

As promised here we go:-

You will know how careful you must be because of your arthritis and that you must be gentle, especially in the spine area. So please be careful.

Here are the exercises. These are only my own way of doing them, so no law suits please if you end up on your backside he he !!

Thought I would do it this way for you. This as I say is only something I do and it does help me. I am not advising you in any way medically. I need to say this so that I don't get into any trouble. Again use these as a day to day workout to keep you supple. Do not force yourself to do any of them.

If you feel slightly dizzy, stop at once. Then if you feel like it, you can try again later. You will hear at first crunching, crackling and so on. Don't worry. This is because you are using parts of your body that are normally not used a lot. Gently is the keyword here.

All of these to be done - if you can - 5 times each, twice per day. Or failing that just as many as you can do without forcing yourself. Are you sitting comfortably, then we will begin he he !!

Slowly lower your chin onto your chest, and bring it back slowly so you are then looking slightly up.

Slowly turn your head to "look" over your left shoulder. Repeat looking over your right shoulder. I personally go from left to right, rather than 5 times each side.

Slowly lower your left ear to your left shoulder. Repeat on the right side. Again left to right.

Hunch your shoulders up to your ears, gently let them drop.

If you can, after all of that he he, rotate your shoulders to loosen them up.

I know this is a full workout for me, so I don't know how you will fare. As you do it more and more, you can definitely feel the looseness coming through. It gets easier in time.

I know I will try anything, so I hope that this might help in some small way.

Take care.

Hiya my trusty assist.,

Funnily enough, my husband bought me a freezing type spray on thingummy. He took a weird, warped pleasure in spraying it on and listening to me scream. I soon put a stop to that and decided to visit the doctor instead and ask for his help with a presciption product.

The product I use now is really quite good. I am in the UK so no doubt the brand names will be different. It is called Traxam, it is a foam, just like mousse, and it dissolves on application. As I said it is an analgesic + antinflammatory product. It is on my bedside table upstairs so I cannot find the manufacturer name just now.

I am sat downstairs, half asleep, stiff as a board, perspiring heavily, with itchy bits all over, a headache and rigid muscles, but apart from that I am doing fine. Builders coming in the early morning, so I will be up with the lark and smiling - forced, painful smiling anyway, hair sticking up all over, no make up on, hastily put on clothes, normally back to front and inside out, and pretending I have been up for hours, letting them think that I have just cleaned the house all the way through, done the laundry, baked a pie and asking if they would like me to make them a coffee. When they go, I will just collapse in a heap and go back to bed.

Anyway it is 1.45 am here, so I must be off to my bed before my husband finds me up and awake when he gets home at around 3.00 am. Heads will roll.

I will bid you goodnight and will let you have more info tomorrow.

Take care.

Goldenwings thanks for replying so much I enjoy reading what you have to say.
The thing with my situation is the tenderness has gone away and very rarely did it ever hurt to breath but yes it did hurt when I took a deep breath but very rarely.
Last night I noticed I slepted in a wierd position and it did hurt a little but not as bad as the first few months of it.
This is why I get so paranoid the pain moves around both sides sometimes stays on both sides but not to often.
It started as one simple pain then became this big thing thats hopfully dieing down but very slowly.
A part of my thinks I have a dislocated rib or something like that. It now just hurts on the left side under the nipple area. It doesnt hurt so much near my sternum at all just on that one side.
I also went to a chiropractor who took xrays I will no more about that next week but he said its odd that I hurt in the same place in the front of my body and have this tight not on the same part of my back opposite the rib pain.
I don't know if that means a out of place rib of some sort but I do remember having that knot there for years at a time with no real problem. I would say 6 years ago that knot gave me pains but now it doesnt really anymore.
I think they just might be 2 serperate things.
But yea my on the side now just feels like tightness or pressure and not so much pain or achy anymore.
As I said the tenderness is gone and I am left with pain that moves around or comes during diffrent parts of the day.
I actually did bikram yoga where they make you do yoga in a 120 degree room and had no pains at all. We did alot of crunches as well and I had no pain. I have no idea what to make of this haha nothing is consistant!!!

Hiya Shard,

You know, I was thinking about the front pain location and and it going straight through to the back. Has it been suggested that you might have fractured a rib in the past? As you know, this cannot be treated medically and it can take an age to heal. It can be done quite easily too. This injury is common in contact sports and usually occurs when you have a hard impact to the chest such as an elbow.

It can cause pain and swelling at a particular point in the ribs, also when you breathe in deeply or when you cough or sneeze. Pain can also be felt at a specific point when someone presses in over the whole of your rib cage. The main thing to do for this type of thing is to rest, which I know is not possible for busy people. Just a thought.

Back to costo. Forgive me if you have already mentioned it in another post, but does it hurt when you wear a bra? Even a non-wired bra causes constriction and this hurts like mad if you have costo. Try not wearing one at home and notice if the pain eases off. Another thing is to make sure you are wearing the right sized bra. Ill fitting bras can cause pain in the upper chest area and shoulders. Another thing is when you are laying down in bed and get comfortable, as soon as you move from that position and your rib cage moves, this again will cause intense pain.

The only other thing is that when you are in pain of any type, the normal reaction is to tense up your body. When you do this then everything is and does get stiff, sudden movement will then really pull at your muscles and any tender area.

Sorry I can't work out anything for you, but you must keep on top of this. Let's hope the results of your tests are helpful.

Take care.

Thanks golden wings.
As for wearing a bra I know I have gained some wieght since I stopped working out but that doesnt mean I have man boobs haha...
But I have read alot about women and there bras hurting them. My mom was one of them.
Fractured rib so you say. I was a big time bodybuilder at one point and I did train like mad. But I dont ever remember doing something out of the ordinary that would hurt me.
Can a fractured rib give the same symptoms as costo? How long would it take a rib to heal if thats the case?
The reason i ask if they are the same symptoms is because I use to get the tender feeling on the left side of my sternum where it felt like someone was pricking me with 1,000 little pins then it would feel sore or bruised. However this developed later on. Originally I just had pain directly under my sternum and to the right on the rib.
This certainly is a wierd thing but it has gotten better and its alway good to keep a journal of your pains. Sometimes it can take so long you dont even no if you got better or not.
But the ultrasound did detect restricted blood flow((inflammation) in the area under my sternum.
Wierd this all happen after an anxiety attack!!! I drank coffee to get me a little high never relizing I was so sensitive to caffiene (which I stopped).
A year before that I did get heart attack pains that were more achy then sharp after a cardiologist visit they ruled out it wasnt heart probs and the pain went away in 3 weeks.
I think this was my first bout with costo. A year and a half later is when it just decided to stay with me. Both very anxiety induced times.
Sorry for the long story goldenwings Iam sure you hear lots of stuff on here. I relize some people are worst off then me and even though I have no religion or dont no what there views are I still prey for them.
But yea back to my questions can you answer any of them or guess?
Again thank you for taking the time and talking with me.

Hiya Shard,

How red am I going? :o I answer so many posts that I didn't realise I had put you in a dress, sorry about that he he !! ;)

The thing is with the rib fracture, I know the only solution is rest and strong painkillers. Not easy to do the rest bit, but there is not a medical treatment for this type of problem. The thing is too, once you or anyone with a possible rib fracture feels that it is getting better, the tendency is to go ahead and continue to do things you did before. This means that in a lot of cases the tenderness and inflammation are not having time to subside, and the extra work before it is ready doesn't give the area time to heal properly. More localised pain I would have thought, rather than overall rib area pain. It would I think be confined to specific parts of the rib cage.

Inflammation is what costo is about. It is inflammation of the cartilege as I said previously. This is why the muscles around the ribs are tender too. The other thing you said about it coming on after anxiety attacks. Think about the way you get thumping palpitations with them, and can end up also gasping for breath, and then you feel as though your chest is going to burst open with the pressure. Figures hey?

Not much more info here for you, but worth thinking about. One other thing I want to say is your point about not being as unwell as others who come here, I know and so do the rest of the members here that your problems are as serious and as worth taking the time to listen to and advise about as the next person's. They are causing you a lot of discomfort and you need to come here and ask advice of us all.

Once again sorry for giving you a change of gender :o What am I like hey?

Take care.

Dear Dr. Goldenwings, Lol. from your assit. Linda

You mentioned this foam you use TRAXAM, i went on the net and searched it, I can find it no where under drugs in the U.S.A. only in the UK. It says FELINAC, is this the generic form. Do you anything know about this in comparision to something made in the U.S.A? Is it a script? I would really interested in trying this, I cannot take anti- inflamatories, yuck my stomach. I am having a better day today, hope you are also.

Hiya Nurse Linda he he !!

Yes Felibinac is the generic name. I use it only as advised, and I have had no reaction from it. I am the same as you in that I cannot take oral NSAID's, and I also take aspirin because of the heart and APS problems I have. As I say I haven't had a bad reaction at all, I was very surprised by this as normally I am in trouble with drugs that don't agree with all the other medications I take.

As far as the UK goes, yes it is on prescription. Worth you asking about though. No need to tell I know, but read the inforamtion leaflet on it, and if you have any doubt whatsoever, leave it alone.

Hey Goldenwings,
Yesterday i hardly felt anything and today its giving me some pain more like a nagging pain undermysternum, the past few days it has just been feeling tight sort of like how a muscle feels after you work it out.
The only physical thing I have been doing is having sex and walking my 100 lb german shepard. He does pull alot and I think that hurts it as well.
I got into a fight with my girlfriend last night after a nearly perfect day and woke up with this pain I dont no what to think

Hiya shard,

The only thing is any emotional stress can increase inflammation inside the body. Physical exertion like a 100lb dog pulling on you will definitely cause irritation of the already inflamed outer area. Only gentle exercising is normally recommended, if any at all until the ribs settle down.

Have you been back to the doctor yet about all of this? If not, I really think you need to do so.

Take care

My Dr is a good Dr but thinks its all pyschological or close to 100 percent. He said the times I get these pains and how they are sparked off indicates alot is mental.
He also wants to meet my girlfriend because this all started the same week she moved in. He is pretty good at reading people and how they interact. Seeing as how my bro had prostatis that was magically "cured" with paxil after 3 years of bad pain! He couldnt even go to the bathroom!
I thought about it and as of right now my pain is gone just as mysteriously at itb came into my life...
I get my xrays on Tuesday and one more ultrasound to check my cartilage and my gallbladder etc.
Yesterday out of nowhere i developed an irregular heartbeat in the timesquare crowd and it scared me for a minute. Then i relized I had an ekg and everything appears fine. I think i might need a therapist lol

Hiya Shard,

I honestly do think that getting all of the testing done is for the best. The thing is I honestly do think that you seem to be going through such a lot of stress and this is resulting is so much anxiety.

I know I keep repeating myself on this, but if you could look at getting some relaxation tapes, or some type of relaxation exercises worked out, I bet you would feel the difference. Root out what you feel is causing you the most stressin your life and throw it out. Whether it is a person, or work or things you do in your spare time.

Try it, you never know.

Take care.

Its funny you mention that because I am taking the whole Dr Sarno mind body thing into account.
I notice I get pains when I dont want to do anything or really when my girlfriend nags me alot.
I also live with a delusional grandmother who has made me scared of everythnig my whole life.
Its just really hard I mean I have anxiety when I feel calm and relaxed. That heartbeat came out of nowhere I was just sitting in a crowded fast food place with 3 other friends and bame! For a minute I had really fast heart beats. Last time that happend which was 2 years ago I suspect a day after that was my first bout of Costo!!!!
I was rejected from school and my first girlfriend ever broke up with me.
I mean I got all these pains from a caffiene attack and one day they never went away!
I wake up panicky every morning almost sometimes I think my girlfriend is going to die on her way to work from some stupid terrorist bullcrap or I think Iam going to be in pain for ever and its only going to get worst! Even though my pains are better and there has yet to be another attack on NYC.
What tapes or books would you reccomend.
I like Sarnos approach but from what he said in his books I might be one of the people who needs a therapist.
This last week I have come to terms with alot of things and it has been working which also indicates to me alot of pyschological but now there is a part of me that thinks its all pysical and that I should not deal with the stress factor, even though I have proved to myself it was triggered by anxiety and stress.
What do you think of the Tony Robbins series of books and tapes Goldenwings?

Hiya Shard,

I haven't read any of TR books or heard the tapes, but he is more of a life coach isn't he? I would have thought that something like that would be great as and when we sort out our smaller obstacles and fears. Just my thinking on it.

Before you actually go out and pay tons of money for help tapes of the type that are advocated by TR and Dr. Sarno - no disrespect to either of them - try a few less expensive things first. Some don't cost a thing, other a few dollars at most.

What makes you relax? Sitting by the sea? Birdsong sounds? Whale calls? Dolphin calls? Some people even buy tapes of fish tanks and watch the fish just flitting around, and it works for them. All might sound a bit girly, but you could always jsut try it and see. Absolutely anything that relaxes you can be found on tape and if you can sit and relax and listen it is so good. It is difficult I know, but learning breathing techniques can be so helpful too.

I don't recall your age - not being nosey here - or if you go to school or work. Do you spend most of your time at home? The place where you are when your anxiety hits a high should really be the place that is now made into a calm place for you to be. The thing is most of us can know that something is not right for us but because of either habit or because we are afraid of change we choose to hold on to it even though it is doing us no good.

Just a few more things for you to think about.

Hey Goldenwings,
Well whatever i have seemed to have flared up pretty bad compared to all the months I was ok. It seems my pain went from my ribs to my mid chest!
Its kind of wierd but I have been expecially panicky for the past few days.
I have been doing what Sarno said and the pain is trying to intensify and I havent even done any physical activity.
Well as of now iam getting ready to move into my own apartment. And these past few months I have been looking for jobs but nothing as of yet I guess I should wait a few more weeks because the hotter months tend to be when nobody has anymore work.
I just don;t know if what iam feeling is normal with costo or any other rib disorder because it is always in one place or another or not at all. Iam calling a therapist today because quite honestly iam scared of this condition and also my mental condition because I know it is playing a big part here.
I will look into those ocean noises, it kind of makes sense because while I was in the Bahammas last month I hardly had any pain at all! Then at JFK airport as I was getting my laguage it hit me again.
Grrr
Thanks for listening

Hi Shard,

My pain moves also, same general area but may be in the breast the ribs below, the bra strap area, collar bone, shoulder, blade and arm. I do not know if it costro or fm but at times it really hurts, other times is just sore and till other times It is not bad unless I touch the area. I at times also cannot stand clothes on, even had to take a necklace off already, that bothered me.

Pulling, pushing and repition will flare this. a few months ago I started getting these hard lightning bolt pains from one side of the upper chest to another, had them before but this times I was getting them almost continually, after 18 hours I went to the E.R. the Dr. checked me with all the usual tests and dxed costro.

It s a very frightening dd to have, I can have the pain for weeks on end, it will go away and sometimes come back in a day or so other times it can go away for weeks, but the soreness and the sore spots are always there.

Some people get flare ups of costro that go away and never return others have it chronic.Actually my upper chest is almost always sore somewhere.

it is not all in your head. I think position has a lot to do with it also, I am a leaner and a sloucher.

Good Luck, Linda

Hi all,
Dear Goldenwings (Dr.)
I have pain between my ribs in that place i think its called a solar plexis, right between my breast bones? It took my breath away and i had awful pain when i sat in a task chair, which i am allergic to, and twisted to look at something and then typed. I had to get the hell out of that chair and in about 10 minutes the pain was gone. Is that costochondritis? Thanks
Donna

Hello Donna,

Twisting your body suddenly in the way you described might bring on a sharp pain. Sitting in one place for too long maybe ?? Gerd problems even. Mmmm, I'm really not sure what this could be.

Sorry, I am a bit confused. What is a task chair?

Hello Donna,

Oh, ok. The area you mentioned sounds like the sternum, the bit in between the breast bone. If you twisted one way and the chair jolted you this could really pull your ribs like crazy. Any sudden jarring will cause stress on the area and tenderness. Is this pain an ongoing thing or something new?

oh yea that is a very frustrating type of pain. like one poster said, wearing the wrong bra OR underwire bras puts alot of pressure in that area, the wire in it presses against it to the point of irritating it. but ive heard women who say they dont wear UW bras and still get it i think its worth going to a place and having someone who knows how to recommend bras for your needs, excuse the run ons and misspellings im exhasted lol. i tend to go withot bras as home or visits to my moms and stuff. like we dont have enough to contend with
