Dietgirl -
Try not to be upset or dejected. My Doctor said the same thing. He wanted to see me each month to make sure I was staying on the program, and guess what!?! After 3 visits (months) this last time he said I'm doing so well that he wants to now see me in 2 months! I was very excited to hear that, AND it motivated me to continue. I started out walking for 20 minutes becuase that was all I could. Last Sunday I walked 8 miles, yes 8.
Stick with it and keep the exercise up. Challenge yourself each week to increase how long or how fast you walk. At 200 calories less, exercise will be more of a factor in your weight loss. So keep with your program whatever you decide it to be, and good luck! It's fantastic you've decided to start.

I don't know any doctors that really understand diet and nutrition. I feel that it's more than calories that makes the difference. It's the type of food that we eat. I hope that you have a good doctor, although.... I hope he didn't get you discouraged.
I found that this works. It's so simple. Try eating natural foods and exercise about three hours a week. You can either walk or run with this exercise. Natural foods are the foods that are not processed. I follow a low meat diet; however some eat a lot more meat. There's so many different opinions on this.
I lost about 25 pounds somewhere nearly 18 years ago, and have kept it off. I'm the same weight (or nearly so) as when I was a teenager. I don't look like the typical American "couch potato" adult. There is a solution and it can be done, but it involves a complete lifestyle change.
In my opinion, to be successful you only have to achieve small goals each year. You don't have to reach the final goal; just enjoy the journey. If you lose say 20 pounds in a year, and are more healthy and fit, then you are successful.
The benefits are more than just looking good. Improved lifestyles, which include not smoking, can greatly contribute to the reduction of cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.

Hi dietgirl,
I think it is fantastic that you are ready for this lifestyle change, we are all here to support you and help in any way we can. I also have made that lifestyle change starting about 10 weeks ago. I have lost 12 pounds so far.. and 3 dress sizes. I lose about 1.5lbs a week. I am pretty strict on myself.. especially what I put in my mouth. I have been using fitday.com to help me track my calories, carbs, protein, and fat. It is really easy to use.. and keeps you on track. I also walk 3 miles a day, and during the weekend I will play tennis, ride my bike, or kayak. It's funny.. I have been having a lot of fun doing all this.. it feels so good. I know you can reach your goal. Stay focused, and keep your will power strong.. reward yourself with new clothes when you lose some.. it really helps boost you self confidence. Much love to ya girl..

Of course I don't know the whole situation, but 3 years sounds excessively long for a weight loss program. I think you'll find that the weight will come off long before 3 years; of course, I don't know the state of your health and weight.

justink80,
It took me about 2 years to lose about 25 pounds. I'd lose some weight, and then level off for weeks. I found with the yo-yo syndrome, that your body really makes an effort for you to gain the weight back. Sometimes, you'll gain back a pound or two. It takes a commitment. So, the three years that the doctor said doesn't surprise me.
But some people can lose lots more weight in a short time - which is probably what you may have experienced or know people who have experienced this. I know that I couldn't. I really didn't like the dieting. I hated being hungry, but I was sure glad to lose the extra weight.
I stayed with it, with the natural foods and exercise. Actually, at first I wasn't in to natural foods as much; I just cut out the junk foods and drinks like desserts, candies, sodas, and alcoholic beverages etc.
dietgirl,
That's so wonderful. You are doing so well.
You might want to substitute a banana or some other fruit instead of pudding. For snacks, I enjoy a "trail mix" of raw sunflower seeds and raisins. If you look into natural foods, you'll be able to avoid the extra sugars that are in processed foods. Without these sugars, you can eat more nutritious foods, because the calorie content is usually lower relative to the vitamins, fiber, and minerals etc. that are present.

DietGirl,
I think you need a new doctor. I have NEVER heard a doctor say that diets don't work. My husband went on a diet several months ago. He worked out 3 times a week doing weights and cardio. He also changed his eating habits. When we would go to fast food he would get a kids meal or if he got a big meal he would ask for NO CHEESE and NO MAYO. Here at home when I would make dinner he would eat smaller portions and would not eat seconds. During his dieting he would not even eat many snacks. GUESS what he dropped 20 within 6 months and has maintained a weight of 157 lbs. So diets DO work if you want them to work.
In order for a diet to work you have to be willing to exercise and to change eating habits. If you are not willing to do that then no diets won't work.
But your doctor was wrong for telling you that. I wish you luck and don't get discouraged do what my husband did and you WILL lose weight.

Dietgirl,
I kind of assumed that what your doctor was saying, was the "traditional" way of dieting doesn't work, which causes us to lose and then gain it back. There's so many fads out there.
I think we just need to change our lifestyles by learning to eat better and exercise. And we need to make it a lifetime commitment.
Was that kind of what your doctor was saying? That's my perspective anyway. I'm glad that you like your doctor and he's helping you.
The whole discussion of what's a better diet is subject to so many opinions.... That always makes this subject so interesting to talk about.
