I have been dealing with what all the docs think is GERD. I had a scoping and barrium swallow last november for burning stomach and all was well.
I would have heartburn every once in a while but nothing to bad.
Around March or April of this year I started to have the lump feeling in the throat. The doc said it must be reflux or lpr since all the tets came back negitive last fall.
I now have what I call a tired tongue as well as what look like blisters and redness on the back and side of my throat. Also seem to have ear pain as well.
I went to an ENT and he said all looked well. I asked about the blisters in my throat and he said everything looked fine. I also seem to have some swollen lymphs in the side of my neck but the ENT and GP said they were as small as a pea and ment nothing.
I finally asked my doc if there was anything else I could do so he ordered a CT scan of the neck so I would feel better.(results not back yet)
Has anyone else had the redness in the throat or swollen lymphs from reflux?

Hi
I have LPR and I have the redness at the back of the throat. It is like red blisters, not technically blisters, but red bumps.

Aren't red bumps typical at the very back of the tongue or or they always associated w/LPR? What are usual symptoms of LPR? I am now wondering if I have it? I know that I have a hiatal hernia and icky sick feeling a lot of the day. Does one have GERD with it?

This is exactly why I got on here this morning. I have some of the same symptoms: aching back of throat, neck and ear pain and a general sick feeling. I'm with you but don't know what it is or what to do.

Earlene,
We all have larger papillae tastebuds at the back of the tongue and some people have larger ones than others. In LPR these become inflammed and larger and redder than would normally be the case. Ocassionally they may have the appearance of a raised white head on them which many people including myself confuse with oral thrush. It seems to be an inflammed tastebud with a plaque coating which comes from the PND / mucous at the back of the throat and bacteria on the tongue itself. I am awaiting surgery to correct a hiatus hernia and loose sphincter so yes there is most definately an association with LPR and its symptoms.

i've had this exact same thing. bad heartburn and reflux, painful blisters in the back of my throat, shortness of breath, and swollen lymph nodes under my chin, and a couple nodes at the back of my neck and the side of my neck. i also had a CT scan to check them out. i was convinced i had lymphoma or larynx cancer or something. but they've been there since December and i'm not dead yet. my doctors seem totally dis-interested in them and tell me they just don't know what causes them and not to worry. so i've tried not to.

Hi there ..I have a hiatius hernia diagonosed last year via a scope I also have acid relux and was on omeprazole for 6 months which seemed to ease the problem aside from a couple of flare ups when I maybe wasnt watching my diet..Three weeks ago I felt so ill and have developed what my doctor called severe oesopilogitis, which sound similar to your symptoms..I have been back to the doctors 3 times in a week I feel so bad..I have now been put on Nexium 40 mgs a day and gaviscon advance 4 times a day and I have also been scheduled for a barium swallow ..I also have a sore mouth sore throat enlarged glands and pressure feelings in my ears like Im on a plane!..I used to suffer with Tonsilitis in my twenties and although I had them out years ago the pain feels much like tonsilitis..all this together with the burning in my body ..Im about at the end of my tether quite frankly it is making me so depressed because it doesnt seem to ease up much..the only thing that is helping me is to chew chewing gum (not peppermint or spearmint) after each meal it helps to create saliva and keeps everything moist and eases the pain a bit ..I got this tip from a fantastic book I bought ..a must for all acid refluxers..its called "How to stop heartburn" ..simple ways to heal heartburn and acid reflux ( It deals mainly with GERD) by Anil Minocha, MD and Christine Adamec.. another good book is "Tell me what to eat If I have Acid reflux" by Elaine Magee MPH RD..I Have just obtained them both and when I get better again you can be sure I am going to take this nasty condition more seriously and take their good advice..thanks for listening ..hope we all get batter soon

I have been diagnosed as having LPR. I have the redness at the back of my throat which they call "mounding" meaning the acid irritates the mucosa at the back of the throat. Sometimes I get sores in my mouth and under my tongue. I also have horrible ear pain, headache, my tonsils and throat constantly ache and a general flu like feeling. I also have a "lump" feeling in my throat only when swallowing, it feels like swallowing marbles, or something is catching. Do you guys have this? Mine is only when I swallow. This all has been going on for about 8 months now and it's really getting me down. I'm 49, don't drink or smoke, exercise alot. I only drank coffee. I wonder if the Paxil I took in the past had something to do with it? I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and wonder if that changed my body chemistry? I took Nexium 40 mg twice a day for six months and didn't notice much difference. Do you guys have these kind of symptoms? Is the pain severe? I'm seriously thinking of going to a pain management specialist or an accupuncturist. I had an EGD (upper endoscopy) and esophagus and stomach fine. CT of neck negative. Scope down larynx only showed redness around arytenoids which sit above the vocal cords. All blood work negative. Video stroboscopy showed some redness above vocal cords. No swallowing problems. I have no post nasal drip or excessive mucous, only the sore throat and ear pain. I've had every test under the sun except the double probe PH manometry which no one offers around here. I think in order to definitely make the correct diagnosis of LPR this test is the gold standard and needs to be done. I don't know if the single probe would do much good diagnostically since there is no tube in the pharynx measuring reflux only the esophagus. I don't have GERD, only the LPR. Anyway, LPR needs to draw more attention from the medical community because it is such a debilitating problem, and I believe more difficult to treat than GERD. Your thoughts?

Aw I really feel for you ..I feel like I have flu too..Ive only felt like this 3 weeks but you say you have felt this way for 8 months ..wow..I really do feel sorry for you ..Im wondering if I have LPR too because are symptoms are so similar to yours ..it seems like you have to have a bad attack of anything here in the uk to get some investigation done thou and by the time you name comes up on the waiting list its all over with until the next flare up..so they never really see you at your worst otherwise maybe the specialist would understand just what pure hell this condition is to live with
take care

Diana m,
It took me over a year to get my LPR confirmed by PH monitoring. A private PH monitoring through BMI in the south east of the uk is £ 500. There is a specialist esophaegal investigation unit at St Thomas's London and that is where I was NHS referred. It take some time but it was worth it. The protocol for treating/ investigating reflux in the UK (LPR is still a new idea) is as follows :
ENT see redness in vocal cords and throat
4 months double dose PPI (eg Pantaprozole)
If fails then Endoscopy ( looking for hiatus hernia, esophaegitus)
24 hr PH monitoring
then ? .......probable surgery to correct surgery and loose LES.
Persevere.

Hi Ginger thanks for that info ..its comferting to know investigation is being done here in the uk..I guess Im about 3/4 of the way down the process road now ..I was told the op to repair a hiatus hernia is pretty major here but in the states it is done by keyhole surgery.. I hope the surgery goes well for you ..take care.. DianaX
