Hi all, I had a THR a little over three months ago now and I am starting to return to my normal exercise routine: exercise bike, elliptical, weight training; however, I am not sure what I am allowed to do in terms of pre-exercise stretching. My doctor lifted all the bending restrictions the last time I saw him, but I know there are certain things that you should never do with an artificial hip; are there any stretching guides detailing what you should and shouldnt do available for people with a THR?

HI Alex,
Welcome! I had bilateral THP almost 12 weeks ago. I have also been able to return to many of my exercise routines except running. I am riding my mountain bike, kayaking, hiking, pool running, weight training, ect. I do a fair amount of stretching during my workouts. What you will be able to do has a lot to do with the type of surgery you had. I had posterior, MIS so there are some yoga poses that I will never be able to do again, but they are different from those for anterior approach.
I think as long as you stretch slowly and back off right away if you have any real pain, you should be ok. But it may be best to do a quick check with your surgeon or PT.

Hi all,
I had my surgery 11 weeks ago and I feel like I am going backwards. I am still on pain meds. I am going to out patient theraphy and they have cut back on some of the execersie. I was doing the treadmill everyday for 10 mins. They stopped that to see if the pain would lessen any. I had an anterior approach surgery. I go to the surgeron next week. So I want to see what he has to say about it. They did measure my leg is 3/4 in longer.
Has anyone had a similar experience?? Should I still have so much pain after 11 weeks????
Hope everyone is doing ok.
Thanks,
Cathy

Cathy, I am just about at 6 months and have had very few days with no pain med......all I take is Tylenol, however. Most days, I do fine with just taking it once in the morning, but today I have counted the hours until I could take it again. The difference in leg length will probably cause some pain. I have a difference of 1/2 inch and have felt much better (until today) since I put a lift in my shoe.
Even with what I have just said, I definitely feel I am making progress.

Hi,
Read my other posts in Leg over an inch too long. It turned out to be 3/4" too long but I thought it was more than an inch when I wrote that. The lift helped me a lot. The pain gets worse and worse the more you stress your back with the difference in length. I won't repeat my story here, but read it on the other thread.
Hope you get some relief soon.
