Hi:
I was wondering if anyone here using Lantus has or is experiencing any side effects other than low blood sugar? I have been using Lantus since 11/04. I have to say I love the stuff and wonder why it took me so long to start it. But I have noticed since starting it my moods have changed. I am moody, irritable and it seems my blood sugar stays pretty level. All my mood swings have begun since starting Lantus. Since I take thyroid meds I am going to have that checked to rule that out but I am doubting it's the thyroid meds since it was a good level when last checked. I do well with the Lantus too because my last A1C was 6. Thanks for anyone who can help me with this. I"m researching to see if the Lantus could be the culprit and if not I am going to have my testosterone and estrogen levels checked and whatever else the doc does. Thanks.

Have you tried to log your moods on a calendar w/ your blood sugars. Since lantus is only a basal insulin, covering the times you havent eaten, do you still check a 2 hr after meal to make sure your blood sugars are still on target 2 hrs after meals?

Because insulin resistance & type 2 diabetes can mess with so much in the body when you are out of control including your normal cycle, its very possible that by establishing your blood sugars you could re-establish a hormone cycle that might have been blunted before....

Ive never heard of mood swings being associated w/ insulin, its not listed as a side effect that I found, but anything is possible. It(insulin) is a hormone too!

Well I thought maybe at first that because I take Levoxyl for my thyroid that maybe that was messing me up. But then I remember this mood thing all began when I started the Lantus. I think it may be caused from consistent low blood sugars, especially during the night. I have been taking 17 of the Lantus at bed but have went slowly down to 15 units now and taking the dose earlier in the evening to prevent the low level in the morning. I'm afraid that I may need to go back to my old NPH and Regular meds. (Yuck) I think I am going to give myself another couple of days to see how my moods go and as you suggest to record it. If no improvement I will call my doc. Thanks for you help and reply!

Let your doc know about the lows and maybe he could suggest you take the lantus in the am instead. It is more predictable than NPH so it should be better for your lows...sometimes by switching to the am, it can help. That or sometimes they recommend taking it 2 xs a day but 1/2 the dose each time. There are other options other than going back to NPH.
