I posted a little while back about some side effects from the Nuva Ring and a few of you mentioned acne. Well, I love the ring- EXCEPT my skin has broken out like crazy since being on it (only a month so far). To be more specific, I have white bumps that are deep under my skin that never seem to surface. From my horrible picking habit (sigh), these are now red scars that don't seem to ever heal. Before b.c., when I used to get breakouts, they would usually heal within a few days and go away. Its really starting to frustrate/depress me because this birth control works well with my body, but my face looks like a pizza. My face has never been flawless, but its definitely at its worst. So, Im wondering if anyone else has this problem, how long it lasts (did your body adjust to the b.c. and did it go away then?), and have you found a way to make it better? I am planning to stick it out to see if my body/complexion adapts. I would hate to go off the Ring b/c of this.
Thanks!!

Every hormonal method of birth control has the potential to cause breakouts, especially when initially used. Hormones can cause breakouts. Normally, the acne goes away or at least subsides.
Use a good facial cleanser in the morning and at bedtime, and quit picking at your face-- you risk scarring by doing that. In time, it should go away, you just need to give it time (a few cycles).

I used the Ring for about 5 or 6 months and I began developing severe acne...but they weren't like regular zits...they were the way you described, deep below the skin...and I also have a squeezing habit :) I tried using Proactiv and it helped calm it down, but now that I'm not on the ring I don't need to use it anymore and I just get a zit every now and then. So, if you can't stand it I would get off of the ring. Just so you know, Proactiv sells a cream to reduce redness and scarring from acne...if that's too pricey...I switched to the Oil of Olay cleansing cloths and they seemed to help my complexion a lot! Good luck!

Yeah...that is what I am afraid of. Which is a shame because Ive been on about 4 or 5 birth control pills over the last 7 years or so (Im 23 now) & Ive had horrible reactions to all of them. The zits seem to have gone away for now (fingers crossed). Maybe like one below the surface that is small- and im NOT touching it. But its the marks theyve left behind- these flaky, scarring red things that just ARENT healing. Usually in my past, if I had a breakout, itd just flake off eventually, but these are just becoming a part of my life!! Its been about 4 weeks now!!
Thanks for letting me know. I'll give it a few months- the idea of severe acne freaks me out, but this is just the only one that's worked with my body (besides the skin).

I just finished my first month of NuvaRing today, took it out a little earlier for my week off. My acne got really bad a few days into it, stayed bad and just in the last 5 days, huge improvement on my face and chest. I'm still breaking out on my shoulders and back, but hopefully next month that will go away. I would stay on it, it should get better. I still have red marks on my face but overall it's a lot better, hopefully it stays that way. I'll keep you posted. Oh and ya I had the same white bumps under the skin.

This was a problem for me as well on nuva ring. Each month I would get a couple deep zits belows the skin. It took FOREVER for them to surface and when they did they were bog and ugly. I suppose these were cystic pimples as I never had one before starting nuva ring. I stopped using nuva ring and haven't had any zits since! (and that was 6 months ago that I quit!)

Hmmm. Im wondering...what are the hormones in the nuva ring that could spur these breakouts in some individuals? I was previously on Seasonale for a very short time, and my skin broke out a bit the first week and then cleared up. Maybe it had more estrogen? Estrogen doesnt do my body good but maybe my skin? Im just curious what hormones specifically seem to do happy things for my skin in case this never goes away...then I'll be looking for something else AGAIN.

I just wanted to update and ask another question to those that were on the ring and had breakouts:
Its gotten a bit better in appearance lately because I have stopped picking, but my overall skin condition has not improved significantly. I wake up with a deep zit almost every day (at least 3 times a week). So its soo hard not to pop it. There are in the same 3 general areas each time. Anyway, I noticed that most of you that answered my thread saw improvement when you went OFF it. But I really like this bc, it helps with my bad periods. Did anyone notice their skin improve while they were on it?
Its been a month and a half, Im going to give it another month or two...but its so frustrating!! I hate my skin right now.

Hi, I just put in a new ring on Tuesday. My chest is still totally clear, back is better, face is better, just has annoying red spots. Overall, everything is better, by far. I wish I could say perfect, but I can't complain. I have hopes for the next month or 2 but all of them are riding on the fact that it did make me totally clear when I was on it a year ago. But my body could have changed a lot. Keep posting, I'm curious about your progress. Why do you like it as a birth control so much?

Hey, thanks for your response-
the reason why I like this so much is because I don't even notice that its there at all, other than the breakouts. No side effects. In the first month, (the 3rd week or so) I got a little itchy down there, but then I bought some cream and ate lots of yogurt as a precautoin and nothing ever came about. That was it.
This in comparison to the 3 birth control pills that I tried back when I was 16/17 yrs. old that all made me sick, bloated, gassy, cramps that had me pull over on the side of the road when I was driving, etc. I was just on seasonale prior to this and I bled for a month and a half straight. So this is WONDERFUL. I was about to decide that my body was just not fit for birth control. I also have very bad periods without b.c. that give me unbearable cramps, and the first month on this, I only had to take 2 aleve one day, as compared to the usual 10 a day (which was really starting to scare me, thats just so unhealthy).
So I love this, but I just wish it made my skin nice instead of worse.
One thing I have noticed lately is that my red marks are starting to clear up a little faster. Before it would take weeks, but now its getting a little better. Im gonna keep up with it and see- but its good to hear that its working for you! And, I forgot to mention that my chest (cleavage area) has been breaking out too, but nothing really noticeable. Just little whiteheads that go away. Ive noticed too that the giant white bumps under my facial skin are going away slowly, but now i have blackheads EVERYWHERE. Yuck.

I'm glad it helped your period, that is one thing it did not do for me for this last one. Eating yogurt is good when you're on birth control, I take supplements as well, they have the same bacteria as yogurt. Also I recommend taking B supplements. When I was prescribed birth control they told me it depletes the B. I hope Nuvaring works out.

I use Nuvaring and had a problem with acne. However, I stayed on it and my skin went back to normal.
I used to be a wash and go girl when it came to skin care. I noticed with Nuvaring that I was breaking out more and also getting body acne. But anyway, I just changed cleansers and I use a scrub now and am just a little more into skincare.
All in all, it does get better and it is so worthy to stay on the ring. You can't beat the convenience.

Ya, the convenience is incredible. I have 70% clear on my back, 99% clear on my chest, my chin and lower face keeps breaking out though, is that typical with anyone else on Nuvaring??? Like under the skin zits. Ouchy

I am so glad to hear that it went away for you, Sweet Home. I hope it happens for me! How long did it take for you? I have exactly what emmegirl is describing, not so much the body acne but the breakouts on my cheek, jawline and theyre under the skin and white and bumpy. :( It is looking a little better lately, but I do notice that I tend to break out in the same spot each time.

I break out in the same exact spots too. Right on my jawline and they leave ugly red spots. My forehead is super clear though, so strange. I think by the 3rd month everything should sort of calm down. citygirl, do you notice that you're more tired than usual with the ring? I don't know what else could be causing it. :(

About the tiredness- I've noticed I have no energy lately, but I've blamed it more on the fact that Ive stopped exercising for about a month or two now. I plan to start back up today into my gym routine so we'll see if that changes anything.
Also, I have noticed water retention/bloating lately, but its nothing compared to what I had on Seasonale. Plus I had this problem a lot before any type of b.c. So not sure if thats the nuvaring or not- anyone had that?

Yeah - I agree around the third month everything began to clear up. I too had the jawline zits and around the cheeks. And they hurt!!! Don't know why they hurt like that.
anyway, around month 3 and using some good products, (I am plugging Origins products), everything went back to normal. Also, I use the ring continuously for 3 months at a time. That may make a difference.

Interesting, my acne is at it's worse today and today is the first day that my breasts have increased in size. It's also exactly one week since I put nuvaring in. Wonder how that timing factors in. I'm so glad there is others to go through this with. I've noticed that 3/4 of the zits I'm getting are symmetrical-meaning, if I get one on my right jawline, I get another one on my left jawline in the same place. Just remarkable what hormones do. I may be a little bloated but it's good bc I'm too skinny.

Hang in there...its not fun, I know. Im very encouraged by the 3 month deadline, so I'm just waiting to get there before I get really depressed about it. I take mine out in 4 days, so Im scared that my face will blow up soon since Im getting my period next week.
I know what you mean about the symmetry- its so strange! Mine's in the same place too, generally speaking. If its the right cheek, its the left cheek.
I think I may try to do what Sweet Home suggested at the end of the 3rd month and leave it in all 4 weeks. I've heard some girls doing this to clear up their skin better, because there's less hormonal "shock" as your body tries to adjust. But I dont want to get btb, so I think i will wait til then.
Ive been getting bloated a lot lately, and feeling constipated even tho I'm not. Im pretty thin too, which in my opinion makes it look more obvious and makes me feel large. Again, I dont know if its solely the ring. I have noticed a small increase in breast size, but my boyfriend says he hasn't- its nothing drastic though like most people have mentioned. Maybe if they grow more, my belly will look smaller! But I was so bloated on Seasonale, so like I said before, this is 20X better than that experience.

Ok so acne (tentatively put) seems to be calming down. However I have no sex drive. Like at all. It's an extreme difference from how I was last month. It kind of bothers me but at the same time I also don't seem as moody as I normally, without birth control or anything, am. I also am having a lot of trouble falling asleep at night and only stay asleep for 6 hours instead of the usual 8.5 or 9. Are you having any of this Citygirl?
lady346
09-09-2005, 02:16 PM
Actually, yes, but I don't know if its the b.c. I noticed a huge change (for the better) in my moodiness which Im pretty sure is the ring- my moods don't shift now really, and they did a lot when I was off b.c. Although I have cried once or twice lately (for a reason, but not a HUGE one). But I guess thats to be expected. As for my sex drive, its fine I suppose, but I'm not craving it or anything. I used to because I had a long-distance relationship, but now that we are in the same city, I think that may be the reason why it decreased (or, normalized, haha), not the ring. But its not like I don't want it or anything or have no interest, so I haven't gotten that side effect. My skin may be calming down, too, but not in the places that haven't been hit yet (of course). My forehead sort of sprung up with breakouts but they are worse because i touched them. I never learn :(

hi girls!
eek! i was afraid of this. i noticed this post when i started nuvaring (10 days ago), and i tried to ignore it because i just didnt want to hear anything bad about my new bc & problems with acne. but here i am 10 days later & my skin is going crazy! i had 2 jaw zits the other day (symmetrical, like some of you had mentioned), and now today i woke up with this absolutely ginormous zit on my forehead! it is so incredibly gross! its super red & swollen & white in the middle. just in time for a huge party with my bfs family tomorrow night! i've also been noticing since yesterday that i have a few weird zit like things on one side of my neck. this is very strange for me.
i'm getting very discouraged here. i tried pills in the past & had terrible btb every month so my dr recommended trying a different route of absorption. i absolutely love the ring so far. i made it past the day where my btb always started on the pill. but i cant have my skin looking like this. my brothers wedding is in 3 weeks & i would hate to go looking like this.
have any of you seen an improvement at the end of the month...or maybe on your week off? i dont know if this is just an initial breakout or if this is going to continue. i want this ring to work so bad, but i refuse to deal with acne...thats one of the reasons i went on the pill in the 1st place.
i'm thinking that if it doesnt improve within the next week, i'm gonna take it out early. has anyone done this? how long does it take to go back to normal after stopping the ring?

Forehead zit, yup had the big one too. Last month, my first month on it, my skin calmed down a few days before the day I took it out for my break. May have just been lucky. The reason I've been able to deal with the acne, well actually I've been dealing badly but I've stuck with the ring into this second month, is because I was on the ring for 4 months last year and I had gorgeous skin by the 3rd month. I don't want to give you false hope, or anyone else, but I think you have a good chance of clear skin in the future. This is coming from me, who's had chest, shoulder, back, face acne. All of it mild to moderate but still very annoying. I would suggest taking b vitamins and investing in really good makeup. I've tried Alesse, Levlen 28, mircette, ortho lo and nuvaring and I really like the convenience and the lessened side effects of nuvaring. Well you, citygirl, and I are in the same boat, so if you have anymore questions or concerns, we're here. Good luck.

Haha, my giant forehead zit is just now going away- I have a nice scab there that I keep having to cover up. Nice how we've all been through that. So its about to be my 2nd month and just today ive noticed a SLIGHT decrease in oil and have no new breakouts. Yesterday a painful one started forming underneath my nostril, but you can't see it and I'm not going to touch it. It just hurts. Lately all I have are red marks but not really anything new, so I think its getting better? I am just encouraged by the 3/4 month thing, when I hope it will improve. Allison I know exactly how you feel, it is NOT fun when you have stuff planned and your skin goes crazy. I actually invested in B vitamins and bought Mineral makeup, and it covers up my breakouts really well, so Id maybe look into that? Bare Minerals is the name of it. Its $$ but worth I think. Also, Ive been taking evening primrose oil and some other supplements, but I dont know if theyre helping or not. Im just going to wait it out. I've been on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen, Ortho Novum 777, Mircette (I believe), Seasonale and now this (starting when I was 16, and now i'm 23) and this is the ONLY one that didn't give me horrible stomach pains, water retention, horible cramps, etc. So I'm going to wait it out. I really like this otherwise. I'll be getting into my 3rd month, so Im anticipating improvement, we'll see! Oh- and my advice is don't pick and obsess more than you need to- sometimes you have to, but I made mine worse in the beginning because I was frustrated.

Oh, and just to clarify- in my last post, I meant to say its about to be the END of my 2nd month. Sorry for the confusion! :)
And I also didnt answer your question Allison, sorry bout that- I haven't taken it out early yet, but I did notice that my skin cleared up MINORLY when i took it out for my period week, but then it broke out again 4 days later during my period. What I plan to do next month (the end of my 3rd) is keep it in all 4 weeks and then put a new one in. Hence, skip my period. I believe Sweet Home mentioned that in this post and said it helped her skin. I think Im going to try that and see if it helps me. I had btb during seasonale liek you mentioned, so in order to avoid that Im gonna try to keep it in after my 3rd month, since hopefully Ive adjusted to it by that point. If you definitely can't handle it, then maybe try something else, but I was about to swear off b.c. until I tried this, and so Im just crossing my fingers and waiting for my skin to clear up. So I would maybe wait? Nothing else has worked with my body.

thanks girls. its nice to have other people to go through this with. i guess i'll try to stick with it because i'm really loving the ring so far aside from this nightmare! i'm up to day 12 with no btb (for the past 7 months it always started on day 8) so this is a big deal for me. my chin zits are pretty much gone...just flaky, but this forehead one is a killer. i did pick at it...i know thats bad...but it was so huge i had to do something. i had that party last night & it was terrible. i was hiding behind my hair the whole night. i woke up with a whitehead right under the corner of my mouth this morning. i hate this!!! i've started up my routine of drinking lemon juice & using aspirin masks that i read about on the acne board. they worked wonders in the past for me but i'm not seeing an improvement yet which is a little odd. i usually start to clear up in about 3 days.
i'm scheduled to put a new ring in 4 days before the wedding (on a wednesday). do you think i would have better luck if i wore this ring for an extra 4 days & then put a new one in the day of the wedding (which is on a sunday)? i kind of wanted to get back to a sunday schedule anyways. have you girls noticed that you skin is any better at the end of your off week or in the beginning of your 1st week? i know its different for everyone but it seems that this is effecting us in the same way.
emme - when you were on the ring last year, did you get the same acne when you started or was your skin fine throughout the 1st few months? i'm keeping my fingers crossed that we all get over this soon!
also, which b vitamins are you taking? anything specific or just a combined b pill? i guess it wouldnt hurt to try it!
thanks again girls.....this is so frustrating!!!

My skin starts getting better more towards the end of the 3 weeks I have it in. I am taking a combined B vitamin and a pro-biotic acidophilus pill which is supposed to help you to not get a yeast infection. I got both of these at the health food store which is the only place I would go to for vitamins. When I had the ring last year, my normal acne got worse for awhile and then poof all clear. I did not have this lovely chin acne that I do now, I would definately remember that. I hope everyone's skin clears up, I would feel really bad for telling people to stay on the ring if it doesn't.

ugghhh- I was really excited for about 3 days because my skin just cleared right up more or less, almost overnight. Well, today I got my period, and yesterday I woke up with a cheek zit, and today my overall skin is a lot worse. :o I swear, just when I think its getting better, it goes right back.
Emmegirl, mine does the same thing where it appears to be getting better during the 3rd week, and then I get the PMS/period breakouts regardless. Im about to hit Month Three, and I'm starting to think it won't get better!
I've been visiting the acne board a lot to try to help this issue, and I'm starting to think maybe my diet may be contributing. It will be hard, but I am going to try and give up carbs for awhile (especially my cereal, sushi and bread) and see if that helps. Otherwise, I give up. It is a vanity thing, as this is the only problem i have with the ring, but it is SOO frustrating.

citygirl...have you tried drinking lemon juice or doing aspirin masks? i read about those on the acne board & i swear they help. i started again the other day & my skin is finally starting to look better. the monster on my forehead is finally gone & i have no new big ones since i started that routine again.

I keep getting this exhausted feeling for the last few days. I know it's from the birth control. It's unlike anything I've ever felt. I also am really scatterbrained lately. So combine these 2 symptoms and the last few days haven't been fun. Acne seems -ok- lots of marks but they seem to be slowly diminishing. No big lumps or anything. I can actually cover up everything now with makeup and it looks like my skin is pretty clear. Sooo tired, going to bed. I take mine out in a week from today, dreading it, 7 looong days for my skin to break out. Good luck girls.

Allison- No I havent tried that. Might as well give it a try- it sounds pretty natural to me. Tea tree oil has been working really well for me, but it doesnt exactly PREVENT zits, it just seems to heal them up really fast, and makes my skin nice and smooth and less... inflamed. It does leave red marks but they go away if you keep using it, once it totally heals up. Id rather have red marks and have my skin FLAT and smooth then bumpy.
Its wierd because my whole left side of my face is FLAWLESS. Which is great-feels like baby's skin. :D But my whole right side is NOT...i guess its just my period. I am starting to see an improvement overall tho, despite my current situation- maybe theres hope!! I've also noticed that I look really good at night, and then wake up and look broken out.
Emmegirl-Im sorry about ur tiredness...I havent noticed it related to the b.c. exactly, but I havent had the energy to work out in about a month or two which is RARE for me. So I dont know...
Are you considering maybe leaving yorus in and skipping ur period to avoid the 7-day breakout week? I don't know how I feel- I dont want btb, but my skin was starting to look real good until my cycle came.
