View Full Version : Irritated and red eyes

I have no problems with my eyes when I am at home or outdoors. However, when I go to the mall or grocery store, after I walk around for about 5 minutes, my eyes start get watery, irritated, and they turn red. I believe it is the air conditioning in those buildings that affects me for some reason.
I'm pretty sure I know why this happens. I used to use the computer excessively and the whites of my eyes started to fill up with thin, red blood vessels. After noticing this, I stopped using the computer so much. Now, are there any artificial eye drops that can permanently get rid of these blood vessels in my eye so that I won't look like I'm crying when I'm walking around in a mall or grocery store?

Hi, I have a problem in stores, too. For me I just think the air is extremely dry and dusty, as I work in the A/C and it doesn't feel like the same irritation.
You can try a lubricating drop in your eyes when you go to places that bother your eyes. There are plenty of good ones out there. It's a matter or trial & error to find one that works well for you. Just a preservative-free one that comes in individual vials are less likely to cause further irritation. The drops that say they get rid of the redness, only disguise the problem and can cause rebound symptoms, so you steer away from them. The individual dose ones are easy to carry with you too.

One thing unique to shopping-mall air is the "gassing out" of processing chemicals in all the new merchandise.

Drops do seem to help, either because they dilute the air-born chemicals, or maybe because they form a sort of barrier.
