View Full Version : Can't Swallow Solid Food...Anyone Else?

I haven't been 'officially' diagnosed yet. Had an esophogram about a year after my food started sticking in the mucous, but it came back fine. Just had a tube-thing stuck up/down (?) my nose and was told that there was irritation in my nasal passges and above my voicebox.

The ENT said should have a catscan and if that came back negative they would treat me for reflux. It came back as a mild sinus infection, but after a week on Augmentin (which just made me feel awful) and then three days on Zithromax, I am still unable to eat anything solid. I try and it sticks in the mucus and won't go down. So, of course my diet is crap now....because everything mushy and liquid is *full* of sugar. (Pudding, cream cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. I can only eat food that melts (like chocolate) or has no texture. Anything with texture (rice, pasta, applesauce, rice pudding, bread, veggies, meat, beans....) sticks and starts to choke me. I can't even take my meds---I have to get liquid everything or crush it and take it in PB and hope I don't cough.

A few weeks ago a pill stuck in the mucus, and I had to forcefully cough it back out. :/

I have to try and cram the junk food down because I am only 82 pounds. I spent almost 20 years at 88 before this started, and I have to make sure even if I can't eat I get a crapload of calories in me.

I'm guessing I have LPR...will I ever be able to swallow food again? This is a nightmare. Not to mention I'm emetophobic. I'm terrifed all day. And now I hate eating.

Help?

HI,

You might want to consider drinking some nutritional supplements (like ensure). I also had problems swallowing solids and I lost a lot of weight, ensure helped me get my weight under control.

GOOD LUCK!
