Shane:

Our son is definely affected by sugar. He really gets very tired and we noticed more seizure activity. He has peti mall seizures. He did have a grand mall seizure once after drinking a lot of Code Red Mountain Dew and a beer. The doctor told him that caffine and alchohol could be a huge trigger for some people. My son was so scared after the grand mall seizure that he stays away from anything with caffine or alcohol. Note, that I mentioned it is a trigger for some people, not all.

My 5 year old has had several seizures within 30 minutes of eating suggary foods. Our Neuro doesn't seem to think much of it but I know its a trigger for her.

Thanks

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on epileptic seizures, but I could definitely understand the correlation, it there indeed is one: lots of sugary foods are carbohydrates, and carbs contain a lot of the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted into the neurotransmitter serotonin. The more serotonin a person has, the happier they feel. It is known that temporal lobe epilepsy and bipolar mania appear almost identically symptom-wise and very similarily in activity (why anti-epileptic medications like lithium, Tegretol, and Depakote are also used as anti-manic agents), where there seems to be an increased firing of neurons in the temporal lobe. If sugar does cause seizures, I would think that it would be because the increased serotonin produces manic-like symptoms seen in both temporal lobe epilepsy and bipolar disorder. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! God bless!
