View Full Version : 123 blood sugar

My doctor just called to ask me if my blood test was fasting or non-fasting. I told him non-fasting. He said my blood sugar was 123 and he would be worried if I had fasted, but since I hadn't fasted, he said I'm in the normal range. Should I be worried? I have other medical problems and have wondered if this might be part of my problems. Some symptoms are occasional swelling in my ankles and knees, and I feel thirsty often. Diabetes doesn't run in my family, I'm 45, not overweight, but I don't exercise much. Any thoughts on my situation?

The best thing to do would be to see your MD one more time and ask him to draw blood (You need to be fasting) for a Hemoglobin A1c test. This give you a value of your average blood sugar weighted over the previous 3 months. If it's less than 6%, you are probably not diabetic, 6-7% is a diabetic with good control on blood sugar, and above 7% indicates blood sugar levels that are too high.

I agree about getting another test run, but this time a fasting one to see if there a difference between them. Good luck.
