View Full Version : Worried about a broken finger

Hi there..

I broke my finger just a few days ago at work. It was a clean break between the first and second knuckles of my right index finger. Now, I've already had surgery where a doctor placed a steel pin inside the bone to hold it in place. My finger is also in a splint so I'm pretty sure it it's still in it's proper position..

My question is this: Is it normal for my finger to still be swollen two days after surgery? I can still feel a throbbing sensation in the finger. The finger is also much, much darker than the others, a dark red/purple (at least the tip is, I can't see the rest of it) but I was told this is normal and actually a good sign confirming blood flow. Also when I pinch or press the tip of the finger the color only slightly changes, when I release the finger the same dark color returns. Also, the finger is slightly colder than my other fingers.

So... I guess my question is does all of this sound normal to you guys? My doctor said not to worry but I of course can't help it and plus I have to wait until Monday to see him again..

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Swelling is definitely normal after surgery, for a few weeks. However, it sounds like the swelling combined with the bandage is cutting off the circulation to the tip of the finger... If you are still having this problem, call your doctor asap.
