View Full Version : Sprained Ankle and medial malleolus avulsion fracture Questio

So I badly sprained my ankle and have a possible medial malleolus avulsion fracture on foot. The doctor gave me an aircast and told me to take it easy. I am worried that I possibly tore the ligaments in my foot and need a hard cast. I would appreciate it if someone could give me an idea of how to check or what the symptoms are if this were the case. I would also appreciate it if someone could give me the correct treatment for a medial malleolus avulsion fracture. Thanks in advance for your help.

For a sprained ankle it is best to get as much movement going as possible. Being on crutches for an extended time or immobilizing the ankle delays healing and is more likely to lead to instability later on.

I don't know what the treatment for an avulsion fracture is.

I fractured my medial malleolus along with a sprain. I was told to stay on crutches until I saw a specialist. There is a major ligament in that area that can be damaged with a sprain and fracture to the medial malleolus. My doctor checked for damage by running his hand along the ligament. I spent 8 weeks in a boot. My sister who had an avulsion fracture on the outside of the ankle spent 4 weeks in a hard cast. I also had an MRI done but I think that was more of a precaution.
