I've been on Zoloft for about 4 -5 months and have gained 10 lbs...I started out with 25mg and gradually increased it to 50mg and then 75mg...right now I'm back down to 50mg because I'm afraid that the weight gain is caused by this medicine - my eating has been out of control. I just talked to my doctor today and explained the situation and asked if she could put me on another medication...but she said that most of the anti-depressants are basically the same and that she thinks that Zoloft is more likely NOT to cause weight gain...anyway - I've lost almost 40 lbs in the last year and don't want it back, so I'm getting very frustrated  ....so should I just get off the Zoloft all together or what?? PLEASE HELP!!

My daughter was on Zoloft for 5 years and did gain weight, so much that it started affecting her self esteem. We would go to the doctors every year for a well child checkup and I would ask if the Zoloft was delaying her development (she is now 13) and increasing her weight gain, I would always get the same answer (I don't believe so) until I saw another doctor and he said that it could be causing her to gain weight. My daughter was ready to stop taking the medication so he wanted her to stop CT which she did alittle over month ago. She has already lost a few pounds and she is a much happier child!!! So I do believe that the medication can cause weight gain.

Hey thanks for your input...I'm going to try and wean off them and see what happens then...I'm also on BCP's, so it might be them too but I've been on them for a couple of years now.

While there are worse offenders than Zoloft, it is possible to gain weight on all the SSRI's. Some people do OK on Prozac. If you want to stay on an antidepressant, you might try Wellbutrin, Effexor, or Cymbalta, which are in a slightly different class than Zoloft. I gained 50 pounds on Paxil, and I wouldn't let that happen again. I think you're right to be concerned.

Thats weird, I actually lost at least 5-10 lbs on it and same with a friend of mine. It wasnt like I was less depressed and so I ate less..it just seemed to drop off. I'm on 50-100 mg. 100 really helps me be normal again and I do 100 when I have pms or other problems, but lately I've been doing 50mg cause its so expensive and seems to be ok; but if I start thinking about hurting myself...its 100mg. Who cares about money if it'll save my life!

I don't think I gained that much weight on Paxil I've been on it for two months. But because of the fear of weight gain my bulimia is starting up again.
I wonder if the weight gain is from overeating or slower metabulism.I don't seem to be eating all that much but my weight has stayed the same.I'm fighting the bulimia with everything I have. :)
