View Full Version : Fasting Insulin Level LOW, A1C normal, adult onset type 1 possible?

Hiya,

I've been low-carbing dieting for quite a while. The last year or so I simply cannot do it as I"m always hungry - keep getting lows, and whenever I feel low I eat. I'm in a normal weight range - maybe a few extra pounds - just wanted to trim down a bit. I keep getting hungry, and stomach rumbling, and lightheadedness, and I have to eat something to feel better.

I finally had bloodowrk done. Fasting sugar was 88, a1c was 5.3, and where it said "Fasting INsulin LEvel" it was flagged as 4.5 - LOW.

My dr. simply passed on a message with his receptionist (tell her to eat less sugar). HELLOOO?????

Had he spoken to me he would have realized I don't eat sweets, drink diet soda, use splenda in my coffee, and hardly eat bread! I don't eat alot of sweets.

If my fasting insulin level was low - then shouldn't my sugars be high? they weren't.

Bottom line - does this sound like a possible case of Adult Onset Type One Diabetes? Or LADA - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults ?

ANy ideas anyone?

Thank you.

Sounds more like you need to get another doctor. You need one that will sit down and talk to you and explain the test reults with you. According to waht you said of the results he did tell you about, you are normal. There is no low. Keep doing what you are doing and get another doctor. He just crazy. Good luck on the search.

Trek is right.. Everything sounds normal. The problem with feeling low might have to do with what you are eating. Some people have reactive hypoglycemia with simple carbs. Something doesn't have to be made with sugar to be a simple carb. I would try to keep a food diary along with writing down how I felt at different times. See if you can find a cause there. Good luck

Thanks for your replies. According to Labcor (the folks who processed my blood) Fasting Insulin levels should be in the range of 6.5-27. I was 4.5 - out of the norm, which is why it was flagged as 'low'. Which seems to me like I don't have enough free floating insulin eh? Is there anything else to watch out for or something?
