Does anyone know if either Alzheimers and Diabetes sets each other off?

What I am trying to get at is, If you have Diabetes and then get Alzheimers, can the Alzheimers make the Diabetes worse or vice versa.

My uncle is getting worse, now he has to take insulin by the shot for his diabetes.

I seen him the other day and he showed me the needles and the medicine that my aunt must give him.

This is the first time I have seen him in a while, he doesn't look good at all.

He couldn't remember my name and he can't remember how to call someone on the cell phone so I wrote everything down for him.

Just wondering because it seems as if he is getting worse, ever since we found out that he has Alzheimers that the Diabetes is worse.

Dear Joe,

I never heard of any such connection.

Funny that you should bring this up, because I just heard that some study has shown that insulin HELPS an Alzheimer patient to think more clearly. I think all this is still in the early research stages, but at least it gives hope to those of us with an AD loved one ..

Best wishes,

Martha

Here's my vote: Mom has no diabetes at all at age 96 ..never had it. Bill's MIL never had it and died of Alzheimer's.

so, 2 votes for 'no connection in our family.'

Good luck with the poll!

Me too.

My mom is 80 and her Mom was in her 90's, both with late-onset Alzheimers but no diabetes with either of them or in the family anywhere, as far as I know.

Hi -

My Mom had late onset Alzheimer's and no diabetes. I've never heard of a connection, but wonder what the big picture would show?

Peace - Barbara

Hi all,

My father is 78 and so far no diabetes. He was diagnosed with alzheimers and parkinsons about 1 1/2 yr. ago. The only side with diabetes is my mother 75 and her mother, who died of it b4 I was born. No alzheimers was/has been diagnosed for either of them, yet.

I will have to watch the sweets and starches, or I will get diabetes too!

That is my vote. Wannabe

My mother developed diabetes in her mid fifties and shortly there after also was diagnosed with early onset alzeimer's disease that was about 2 years ago. Diabetes brings an added challenge to her health, if her blood sugar is too high or too low it can really impact upon her ability to perform basic functions. i don't know if there is a link between the 2 illnesses but i wouldn't be surprised.
