My mother was diagnosed with ALS last week, all though the symptoms have been there for over a year. I'm so scared for her, and me, but I really don't want to see her suffer. I'm trying to just live in the moment and day by day but it is really hard not to look ahead. I'm still learning about this disease, I don't if knowledge will make it easier or scare me more. Can anyone tell me about how they first handled the knowledge that they or someone they loved had ALS? I'd appreciate any insights.
Thank you,
Jennifer

When I first learned that my father had ALS all I did was cry. Then I made sure that I could be there 100% for him every day. I became his caregiver. His companion and friend. I found out a lot about myself, and my father during the 22 months we had left with him. I am truly sorry to hear of your mother. It is not easy watching a loved one go through this. There was not much people could tell me that made it any easier. I did massive amounts of research and attended his doctor appointments. I tried not to focus on what lay ahead, instead I found myself too busy trying to make sure his last days were the best. We went on many trips together and did anything we could to fill up the days. Hopsice was a great thing that helped us all get through the disease. I recommend looking into a local company to help you. I loved hospice so much, I began to work with them while my father was still ill. So I could learn the ins and outs.

Try to make the last moments you have with your mother count. Every day is a gift. Time goes way too fast. Be strong. I send my love to you and your family. If there is anything I can do of help with please let me know.
