View Full Version : Anyone using "Chromium Picolinate" for diabetic heart health?

I had read an article on Yahoo a while back about chromium picolinate being used to promote heart health in diabetics. I was wondering if anyone caught that article or if anyone here was using it. Here is what I found from a Merck site:

Background: Chromium is a mineral required in small quantities by the body. It enables insulin to function normally and helps the body process (metabolize) carbohydrates and fats. Good sources of chromium include carrots, potatoes, broccoli, whole-grain products, and molasses. Picolinate, a by-product of the amino acid tryptophan, is paired with chromium in supplements because it is claimed to help the body absorb chromium more efficiently.

Medicinal Claims: As a dietary supplement, chromium picolinate is used to promote weight loss, build muscle, reduce body fat, and enhance the function of insulin, but these effects have not been proved. It may lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Possible Side Effects: Some evidence suggests that chromium picolinate damages chromosomes and consequently may cause cancer.

Any thoughts or other info would be appreciated.

I tried the picolinate and it bottomed out my glucose. I 'read further' and it was stated in several places that type1's should not use it. I found a chromium chelate formula from'designs for health' and it does not dangerously effect my blood sugars.

It is supposed to be good for metabolizing sugars, and potentially lowering bad cholesterol. I have been on it for about three months. Unfortunately I can't financially afford to take it as directed, so only take 2 caps a day. I hope it is working. At this point, anything is worth a try.

Please be careful with the picolinate. Have you read 'the program' by scwarzbein? the information that I gleaned was in there. She seems to be somewhat militant in her approach, but I have taken what I want and left the rest. Also 'PH Miracle for the diabetic' by young has some interesting information.
