Hi again, Danigirl

Hot flashes aren't pleasant, are they? I know you said you take Flaxseed oil and they are supposed to help, but also Black Cohosh helps some people. I couldn't take it though, because it irrtated my stomach (I have a very sensitive stomach) Of course HRT is supposed to help, but I don't want to take hormones! Have you had any night sweats yet?

Hi, no I'm not getting night sweats (yet) and I really don't understand why I would start to get hot flashes because I'm on naturally compounded progesterone cream and I thought that was supposed to help with that. I only take it at night tho, so maybe I need to talk to my doc about using it in the A.M. as well. I only had the one flash this morning and I think I had one last week as well. It started with kind of a slight headache and I just slowly started to feel warm all over, and kind of like a muggy feeling - like when you are outside in the sun and its really muggy outside. I don't know quite how to describe it. I needed to get some air right away. Isn't this fun?? Also, I wanted to tell you that I do feel the benefits from the flaxseed oil capsules. Its a brand my doc recommended, they are 1000 mg each, and they are high lignan. I only take one per day. I've tried black cohosh before also for my other symptoms and I can't take that either because I also have a sensitive stomach. I heard something about red clover, do you know anything about that?

Dannigirl, I have read that it has many benefits for menopausal symptoms, but I haven't tried it personally. When I had a hot flash, I would just get warm all over and feel sweaty, but I didn't have sweat pop out all over my face and stuff like alot of women experience. They weren't really bad, I'd get get really warm. Much like you are describing.

Hi, I wish I didn't break out in an all out sweat during my "power surges" I can hardly wear make up during the day. It seems to start on my neck and back and go up to my head. During the night when I get these sweats it is so uncomfortable and sweaty. I'm taking a few different natural things that my Dr. has me on (like evening primrose 1300 mg twice a day, Fem Estro Plex twice a day, something called Ovatrophin twice a day, and progesterone cream in the evening) but not getting any better. I am thinking about going off everything and starting over but....well, a little afraid to try that. I was free of them for about 8-9 months but then the returned. I think the evening primrose is very important for menopause though. Friday I'm off to the health store to pick up flaxseed oil and give that a try. Do you know about how long of taking it before I might notice a difference?
Thank you

Actually, the Flaxseed Oil or Evening Primrose Oil didn't help with my hot flashes and night sweats. I take it religiously. The the that made mine stop was getting on Lexapro (antidepressant). I had gotten really depressed and anxious, didn't want to try hormones either, so I opted for the AD. The day I started on it, they stopped! I used to have them for a while, then not have them for months, then they would return. That's normal though. Hormonal upheaval. Actually I did get a formula from the Healthfood store that did help. I think it was Fem Power or something like that.

Hi, I tried 2 different AD presriptions (low dose) before doing the natural, also didn't want to do estrogen. The first AD did make the hot flashes stop but I could not tolerate the meds, they made me feel so ozoned  I couldn't go to work very well. But I don't tolerate pain meds either so no surprise. So do you have a different suggestion to try instead of the flaxseed oil?
Thanx :bouncing:

I C, some women say Black Cohosh helps, and it's in alot of the menopause supplements, but I have a very sensitive stomach, so I couldn't tolerate it. Sorry you couldn't hang with the AD's, but there are alot of people that just can't tolerate them. I am lucky in that they work for me.

I was searching the web for herbs for hot flashes and I found this:

When women reach menopause, there is a whole array of bothering symptoms to contend with; most of them like: HOT FLASHES, fatigue and depression are caused mainly by estrogen and testosterone deficiencies in menopausal women. Maca herbs help to restore hormone levels and is widely used by women for hot flashes relief and to help "calm down" most of the frustrating symptoms of menopause. This is wonderful news for women!

Ask someone at the healthfood store about this. I had never heard of it. Worth a try :)

littlejmb, Thank you, I will look for it today. I have never heard of it either. I was taking black cohosh but Dr. took me off it (not sure why) but I might look at getting some of that today. I need to remember to only add one thing at a time though. It is nice to be able to ask women these questions, I'm sure my husband can only handle these questions so much. Looking forward to the day of no hot flashes. Thanx :bouncing:

I C Hot, I started a thread on the menopause board called "Treating Menopause The Natural Way". Will you keep us posted on what you try and what works on my thread? If the Maca works for you, that would be a wonderful alternative.

In the past, most of the menopause formulas had Dong Quai in them, but now they all have Black Cohosh. Since that hurts my stomach, I can't take any of them. But - when I started on the Lexapro, they flashes and sweats went away anyway (thank goodness)!!
