I would like some information about the long term use of Minocyline. At the present time my sister has been taking Minocycline for skin problems... She has been using it since 1999.

Approximately two years ago she began having MS like symptoms... Numbness, weakness and tingling in her arms and legs, headaches, pain in her joints... swollen lymph nodes in her neck (not painful)...inablility to sleep......and severe bowel problems... and other problems...She is allergic to the cold.. She gets large red whelps on her skin and has been told if she were to get stranded and it was very cold she could have severe problems, (ie; her airway could close off and it could be life threatening).

She has been to her Doctor and has had numerous tests... MRI's, Scans, blood tests.....muscle and nerve testing. Her test results did not show that she had MS or Lupus. I do think they tested her for tick fever, but I am not positive. She was referred to a neurologist and was told she needed to recondition her muscles and lose weight. (She is 5'7" and weighs 160) He also told her she should stop taking Minocylcine, because a friend of his had taken it for several years and started have symptoms of MS.. I just wanted your opinion on the Minocyline. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Just wanted to say that my husband has talken minocycline for several years for skin problems, but to date has never experienced any symptoms of MS. He knows them well too, as I had have it for all our 22 years of marriage and then some! But, I'll definitely file that away for future reference, just in case!

Hello and welcome. Actually, minocycline is one of the drugs used in the antibiotic therapy that some doctor prescribe for MS. It is called the Vanderbilt Protocol.

Also, when I checked the side effects of minocycline, neurological problems were not listed.

I'm sorry to hear that your sister is having unexplained symptoms. I hope she finds the answers.

Take care,
Julie
