hey bru:)
I've recently added fish oil to my diet and chose fish oil(instead of flax seed oil) because fish oil contains EPA and DHA omega3 fatty acids. Flax seed oil contains ALA, a precursor of EPA. For the conversion to take place, your body needs a certain enzyme, which is variablely dependent on each individual. Some people don't have as much and thus will require larger amount of ALA to get the same amount of EPA from fish oil(think efficiency). Plus, studies have shown ALA stimulates the growth of prostate tumor. Fish oil seems a better choice for me.
3000mg a day.
They cost about the same at Walmart~$6. Buy the fish oil and walk a couple of miles. :D

I take a MultiOmega which is Fish Oil, Fax Oil & Borage. They recommend 1 Teaspoon a day. Bottle lasts 94 days. The cost is $13.99 from *******. That's 15 cents a day. I'm also large so take a bit more than 1 Teaspoon.

Well off n on I've been taking (totally on one year, then quit for three months) three teaspoons of high lignan flax seed oil a day, even tried grinding them myself. Recently tried fish oil at the rate of 2-850mg. capsules per day.
I noticed a tablespoon of flax seed oil contains 110 calories from fat. A fish oil capsule (850mgs) is 10 calories. Only been taking fish oil 3 weeks but I seem to notice a slight reduction in anxiety attacks I experience while highway driving.
Do they make bottled, liquid, non capsulated fish oil?

Yes they do make bottled Fish Oil. After opening bottle refrigerate.

Spend your supplement money on the fish oil.
If you want additional ALA (vegetable source omega-3) use canola for salads and sautees...it's high Omega-3 and nicely balanced with omega-6 and costs no more than other vegetable oils.
Only a very small amount of ALA can be converted to DHA and EPA, but ALA on it's own shows benefits but no need to pay the flax oil tariff.
I got my last gallon of Canola for $3.99.

Unfrortunately, Jennita, olive oil is low in Omega-3 content and not in the same league as flax, fish, and canola.
But it's probably the tastiest of the oils (well, AFTER toasted sesame oil...yummm.)

True but for someone who uses it alot in foods it adds up quick and it is very tasty too as you mention. I can't imagine coating my salad in fish oil (Yechhkkk!!) so that's where gelcaps come in handy eh?

Be careful of fish oil (Omega 3's) as it can make your Cholersterol (sp) go up. I would chose the flaxseed by far!

it is. i have never heard of omega 3 raising cholestorol in any form. its an unsaturated fat. unsaturated fats lower LDL cholestorol levels.

My Mother went to the doctor and took her off of all Omega 3's because the doc said that it had raised her Chloresterol (sp) and he had put her on that prior to her going backi to see him and noticed that since she had been taking them, it raised her level up too high and told her to go on flaxseed instead. Hmm, I don't know if the oil was responsible or something else caused the problem, but just to be safe maybe flax should be the smart choice since it has Omegas just like the fish. Thanks for the info, it is something to consider, personally, in light of this info, I'll go with the flax too! :)

that makes no sense. if he took her off ALL ogega 3s then why did he put her on flaxseed instead? its fat content is over two thirds omega 3! your doc is really confusing me. remember- GPs only receive 2 days training out of their 6 years training on alternative medicine.

Man, do I agree with this! Obviously the doctor knows squat about where omegas are in what foods.
Docs know medicine, not nutrition nor health. They get wind of the basic new thing in nutrition but that's as far as it goes. I mean, they are way too busy staying up with diseases, treatments etc. That's alot of knowledge and hats off to them; but, we can't expect them to know everything about nutrition and sports medicine/science as well, those are whole other fields.
But again, fish or flax, I guess either will do the trick.

Fish oil contains heavy Omega-3 oils (EPA with 20 and DHA with 22 carbons) with 5 or 6 double bonds.
NO vegetable oil contains these oils and the Omega-3's of vegetable oils like flax; and canola, BUT NOT OLIVE. contains high amounts of a lighter Omega-3 oil called alpha linolenic acid (ALA). Tiny amounts of this oil can be converted to EPA and DHA but it is distinctly less effective than the animal (fish) Omega-3's.
But for salads, if you want Omega-3's go with Canola...neutral taste, low price and an excellent Omega-3/Omega-6 ratio. It does everything well except high heat frying...it starts to burn and smell. Fine for sauteeing though.

I have heard that Canola oil is not good for you. It is actually oil from a genetically modified rapeseed plant, but they call it canola oil because it was originally produced in Canada and who would buy it if they called it rapeseed oil? Do a web search on rapeseed oil if you are interested in getting the other side of the Canola oil story.
A couple of advantages of flax that have not been mentioned are that if you buy fresh seed and grind them yourself in a $10 coffee grinder it: 1. Assures you that your oil is not rancid, because how can you tell if you take softgels? 2. Works really great to prevent constipation because it is rich in a form of fiber that is great for the digestive system. 3. Can be relatively inexpensive; I get it for less than $2 a pound at our co-op supply, the online sources are rediculously expensive. Since the seeds are 1/3 oil then that comes to about $5 a pound of oil and 1 tablespoon gives you one teaspoon of oil. 4. Keeps much longer if you keep it in a cool, dry, dark place.
When you grind it you have to mix it with liquid and drink it quickly because at first it is pretty paletable but it rapidly turns into a sort of goo with a weird texture. This is because the fiber absorbs the water.
So flaxseed is really great stuff, but it is probably a good idea to take fish oil, too, to get the advantages of each, but divide the amount of 3's you want between the two of them.
Someone mentioned that the jellcaps had less calories, that is because each jellcap has such a miniscule amount of the oil in it, 10 calories means that there is only about 1 gram of oil in the capsules and it takes almost 5 gellcaps to equal one teaspoon of oil.

Flax seed oil will go very rancid very fast in the store, even in the seeds. Before you buy, chew a couple seeds to determine freshness. When you buy the seeds after determining they are fresh, store in the freezer.
Flaxseed oil is a rather repulsive tasting expensive supplement, canola is a cheap useful food. Try putting flax oil on your salad and you'll see what I mean
As far as name changes go, flaxseed oil is usually called LINSEED OIL and has been used for centuries to make paint and linoleum. It actually polymerizes as it goes rancid. Super-polymerization = LINOLEUM!
Your flaxseed/linseed oil is a lot cheaper in a hardware store than it is in a health food store. :D:D:D If it goes rancid mix it with your next can of oil based paint and do the kichen!
In fact,
The edible Canola is rapeseed oil with the poisonous oil, erucic acid, removed. The plant is a member of the cabbage-broccoli-cauliflower family. It is being genetically modified to produce seeds low in erucic acid and very high in alpha linolenic acid...Omega-3.
All the major health organizations including the FDA, the AHA, the AMA, the USDA have deemed canola safe and beneficial to health. The internet boogeymen who find aspartame a poison, fluoride a Communist plot, and saturated fat and coconut oil wonderful for our health continue the silly rumors about deadly Canola oil being spread by nefarious Canadians to wipe out the population the Earth! (I think I saw the plot on South Park!:D)
Canola oil is safe, cheap, neutral tasting, and healthy food to use in cooking and salads and as butter substitutes. Flax oil is a foul tasting, expensive supplement of no culinary use.
Both are good sources of vegetable Omega-3 oil (ALA.)

Look for TWIN LAB Norwegian Cod Live oil. It's under $7 for a 12 ounce bottle (about 72 tsp. (5 gram) doses that each provide about a gram of EPA + DHA.
It's delicious too, IF you get the unflavored. The mint and cherry flavored are weirdly repulsive tasting.

I actually kind of like the flavor of Twin Lab's mint flavored fish oil, the emusified kind, and I don't like the unflavored, and my husband likes the unflavored better, so it must depend on the individual.
Another product that I like is Coromega, but it is more expensive.

I respectfully disagree with the Flax seed, seed to oil output ratio if grinding. My research shows that it takes approx. 6 tablespoons ground to come up with 1 tablespoon of oil. Plenty of Lignan and roughage though. I ground the seeds for a while. I've switched to Fish Oil as a tablespoon of Flaxseed oil is 100 calories. At my size I need 2.5-3 a day. The fish oil seems to effected my affliction with panic attacks some how.

The flax seed oil ratio is something I read, so it may be wrong. It is hard to beat for a good fiber source, though.
All oil has 100 calories per tablespoon no matter whether it came from a fish or a plant if it is pure oil.
Brutus, if you are interested in trying other supplements in addition to the fish oil for your panic attacks you could try taking 500mg of niacinamide with 3 grams of vitamin C twice a day. This works great for my nephew except that he uses the inositol form of niacin which is more expensive than niacinamide but still non-flush but the niacinamide caused my nephew to lose his appetite and the inositol form does not. He had been having attacks such as when his family went into a restaurant he suddenly had an attack and had to leave and they had to all go home. The niacinamide, or other form of niacin, plus vitamin C work best together. They are much less effective alone. The useful effect starts within a couple of hours and lasts for about 6-8 hours, if you like it you can take it more often. My husband has used the combo for his asthma for a couple of years with great success.
The reason that the niacin/C combo work for symptoms that seem to be so different is because both asthma and panic attacks can actually be caused or increased by allergies, and the niacin/C combo helps control the allergy. Our nephew has recently discovered that his symptoms are caused by food allergies, although he has not yet learned which foods are the problem. He was in an accident, and was unable to eat for several days and his panic/ anxiety symptoms disappeared. It only takes 4 days of not eating the food or foods that are causing symptoms to get relief, assuming that a food allergy is the problem. Allergies to other things such as pollen or exhaust fumes can be the problem, too, and they are not so easy to avoid, but sometimes the niacin/C combo can be a big help.
