I'm not sure..but it could be the dying. Definitely don't dye it again if it's starting to thin out and break off. Dyeing will make it worse.
My hair used to break off at the top too...but it wasn't a lot. There were bits sticking up and it was so awful. I'm not sure if it was the blowdryer I was using back then that burned it off or something (if that's possible)...Or if it was other stuff. Because at the time I had a really poor diet, wasn't eating well or getting many vitamins.. So of course my hair broke off.
But yea, I hated it. Eventually those little hairs grew out so now I don't have as many. Everyone has them because that's how hair grows, but if there is a lot then that's a problem.

I also know a friend of mine who went through the same thing. About half of the hair on top of her head broke off like that...So the hair at the top was like 2-3 inches long, and the rest was down to her shoulders. It just suddenly started doing that one time till half of it broke off. It looked pretty bad, but she changed hair styles to make it a bit less obvious.
I think it happened to her because she has health issues.

You think it could be that with you?
If I were you I'd wait a week or so to see if it's getting worse. If it keeps breaking off then I'd go see a doctor or something. It could be a problem. You don't want to lose your hair that way.

Clueless, have you been coloring your hair yourself or does a hairdresser do it?
My guess is, you are doing it. If so, you have probably been getting the color on previously colored hair, and therefore you've over processed your hair, and this is why it is breaking at the scalp. It's very hard to color yourself without doing this. I'd suggest going to a hairdresser for coloring(if you already are, get a new hairdresser). Just do some serious conditioning treatments. Nothing else to do, but wait and let the broken hair grow back out.
