Husband had the cath removed Tuesday. He is going through the mens guards one every hour. At times, even with the guard he has had accidents and had to change clothes. Any of you have any tips on how to change from one guard to another without getting clothes wet or have dribbles down the legs? Any tips on any of this would certainly be welcomed.

Thanks a bunch

Hi Peg,
Sorry to hear about the hubbies situation. I had much the same experience for about a week after the cath was removed. I used the extra absobent male diaper by Depends until I gained enough control to switch off to the extra absobent guards. I dealt with the change by squeezing the urethra to cut the flow until I could maneuver a change of pad/diaper or clothing. Best for him to remain as horizontal as possible until he begins to regain some control. He may experience some pain or discomfort inside the penis as well as a result of the surgery. The uretter suffers quite a bit of trauma when the prostate is dissected away and then sewn back together. Some guys don't have much of a problem, but others of us do. Our thoughts are with him ... the road to recovery is a rough one sometimes, but things will improve.

Regards,

Thanks for your help. I guess this is a normal thing to go through after such a short period of time after the cath is removed. Your tips are going to be so helpful to him. I am thinking he might switch to the diaper until he has more control. Did you go through any bladder rehab program? His Dr. wants him to go through this. He is going on the 21st of this month. At this point I think he will try anything.

Thanks for being there

I had been doing the Keagle exercises long before surgery so my muscles were in pretty good shape to start with. My problem at that time had more to do with bladder spasms and perinium pain. Once I regained a bit of control it became much easier ... at least the flood gates had subsided. :jester: Bladder rehab is appropriate for alot of guys and if the doc advises it, I would certainly go that route. Best of luck.

It has been 7 days now since the cath was removed. Things seem to be getting better. He is slowing down on the use of the guards. A couple of times he said he had some urinary control. This made our day. We can not find the extra absorbent mens guards. I have looked everywhere. Where have you found yours? Thanks for the help you gave us. This is great having this board, but even better to have people share their own experiences. What a big help.

Thanks to all
