Hi there. I have a few questions and i hope that someone can answer for me. I've been testing myself and i'm getting some odd readings. I have a new meter and i wash my hands when testing so why is it reading so high?

Moring before breakfast 161 retested 142 (about a minute later)
After lunch (At least 2 hour after) 170 retested 187 (about a minute later) then it was 96 then 153 then and at bedtime it was 140. all in one day. But today my reading are at 113, 108 and 105. I took a A1C home test and it was 5.3

My other reading usually is around 114 am i doing something wrong when i'm getting then high reading? Btw i did the control test too.

The other question is i have hypothroidism can that cause diabetes?

Ok one more question i have a friend that is a diabetic and he just got his A1C test and it is 8.02 and 6 months ago it was at 6.54 and can you tell me what his bg aveage is? thank you for your help

Hi kee4u,

Here's an a1c conversion chart so you can get an idea of what your friend's average blood sugars were.

13 330
12 300
11 270
10 240
9 210
8 180
7 150
6 120
5 90
4 60

As for your readings...they are strange. Is it possible that you didn't have the meter coded correctly for the strips you were using? With some meters (One Touch) you need to make sure the meter reads the same number that is on the strips. I would also suggest that you use some test solution to see if your meter is reading correctly. If you don't have any, you can pick some up at the drug store where they sell all the diabetic supplies. Other than that, your meter shouldn't be giving you those wide variations within just a minute's time, especially if you haven't eaten or done anything. Try the test solution a couple of times, within a few minutes, and see if it's giving you the same wide fluctuations (the numbers are going to vary somewhat but should only be a few points from each other). That should tell you if the meter is working correctly or not.

There is no point in testing twice in a few minutes unless you think that there is a significant problem with the machine (reading 20 after a large meal). All machines work to an accuracy of about 15 percent. So, if the meter reads 100, the blood sugar could be 85 or 115 (15% in eithe direction). All the numbers you quoted are well within this guideline.

While you blood sugar doesn't change that drastically from minute to minute, it does change over hours and it also changes from day to day. This depends on what you eat, when, how much and how much exercies you are getting - among other things. That is why your sugars are consistantly different the 2nd day as compared to the first.

Good luck to you.

Cora
