There are many great plans out there - some stressing calorie counting, some counting fat grams, some counting grams of carbohydrates. The best thing to do is read some about different plans, take stock of yourself - like what is contributing to your excess weight, what type of plan seems to address your needs, and what type plan you will be able to sustain.

Starving yourself is definitely not necessary, and, for most people IMHO, just sets in motion a life time of weight/metabolism problems.

Good luck!

Years ago I switched to eating natural (non-processed) foods, and I now at times have trouble keeping the weight on. I also developed a regular exercise program, which burns up calories, and helps keep the body in good form.

I think a lot of smart people, who don't want to do un-healthy things like starve, have developed these better habits. It's something that a person has to do all the time. With exercise, a lot of people will start, and things will be better - and then they'll quit - and then go back to the old bad habits. So, when you start this exercise, stay with it for life.

Keep your weight healthy - not too low, nor too high. :)

Hello, All good advice. The thing to not to forget is to get some exercise. It doesn't have to be heavy, but you've got to get that bod moving. You can start off with just 20 min. per day, then gradually increase it to 30 min. or more. It can be walking, bicycling, scootering, skateboarding, rollerblading, favorite exercise videos, stationary bike, treadmill, martial arts, badminton, etc. Also adopt the attitude that exercise is playtime. Some people have lost weight without exercise, but don't forget that exercise has other benefits besides loosing wieght like upping the immune system, getting a really nice firm bod, upping self esteem, slowing down the aging process, etc. A good place for looking at various diets is the ivillage website, which gives a short summery on each diet and rates them according to being healthy, cost effective, and hunger. All the diets are there that are talked about on this site plus more.

lan,

We live in a world where things get way to complicated. Do this and you'll lose weight:

1. Eat the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, with at least 1/2 of the veggies cooked (important).

2. Eat as much else as you desire but only natural whole-food based products with as little artificial ingredients as possible.

3. Exercise on average of :30-:60 each day. Mix it up with cardio and resistance however you want.

Thats it. Guaranteed effective and simple. Let me know if you have any ?s on how to accomplish 1,2,and 3. Good luck!
